Ruben Villa UD12

Champion97's picture

Prediction.

Navarrete should be the favourite based on the Dogboe fights, the rematch was one sided, I think Dogboe was worse than the first time, but Navarrete built on his performance from the first fight. The weight might favour Villa slightly, because Navarrete hadn't fought at feather in almost 3 years before his last fight, his last fight was at super feather, he's massive at 122, might still be the stronger fighter, but not by as much as he usually is, so it will be interesting to see what that takes away from him as an aggressive fighter.

Navarrete has 81% KOs, Villa has 27%, so Navarrete is definitely still the puncher in this fight. Dogboe couldn't hurt Navarrete, Navarrete hasn't been down or even hurt as a professional as far as I know, so I don't think Villa has any chance of hurting Navarrete.

I can't find any footage of Villa's recent fights, so I can't say much about his style, but I saw him fight last year, he has a solid skillset, he has a good amateur background, but I remember watching him fight and not being as impressed by him as a lot of other prospects, I don't remember seeing a lot of weaknesses, but he seemed one paced to me. Navarrete doesn't have the amateur background Villa has, Villa is the better defensive fighter, but Navarrete is the much more experienced professional, he's a solid offensive fighter, is a great pressure fighter, but he also has a decent jab, can fight on the outside, Dogboe tried to use movement in the first fight, but Navarrete stopped Dogboe getting out of his range, I don't think Villa can use lateral movement against Navarrete.

Navarrete is a switch hitter, he's not easy to prepare for, but Villa is a southpaw, Navarrete fought Glenn Porras in early 2018, got an early stoppage, but hasn't fought a southpaw since. Both fighters have been active, both have fought this year, and fought at least 3 times last year, but Navarrete has fought twice since Villa's Villa's fight, so he's been more active, I thought he looked slow in last fight, might not have trained as hard, but he should have had a good camp for this fight.

I wouldn't be shocked if Villa won this, but I think Navarrete will win a clear UD, I think he'll struggle technically, Villa will box well in the first half, but I think he will take over in the second half.

Clear win for Nava but respectable showing by Villa, did well in the second half

Champion97's picture

Villa boxed brilliant, but Navarrete's great start was the difference, both great knock downs, the first was a long uppercut which was thrown at an awkward angle, looked more like a hook when he threw it, the second was a wide left hook, Villa didn't see it coming, I thought he was hurt worse than from the first knock down, raises the question of how good Navarrete's finishing is, but Villa did well to recover, and both knockdowns were late in the round. Villa's defence was good, but not good enough against a puncher like Navarrete who can fight on the outside, can throw hard, accurate shots from long range as well as fight on the inside. Navarrete doesn't look skilful when he fights, but the reason why he's hard to out box is the adjustments he makes with his feet whenever the opponent tries to pivot, he's always able to keep the opponent in front of him, which helps him to control the tempo. It's a shame Navarrete against Stevenson won't happen anytime soon, it would be interesting to see if Navarrete would be able to control the tempo of the fight against Stevenson, and how he'd deal with the offensive ability of Stevenson. He'd need at least 1 more fight at 126, but Navarrete is big enough to compete at 130 at some stage, I think it's Top Rank's most competitive division.

Jarod Killian's picture

The 2 KD's did Villa in as far as I'm concerned. Otherwise, my scorecard would've been a draw and so would've been 2 of them judges. Which would've ended up being a majority draw which would've been a moral victory for Villa. I think Villa was a tad bit more green than I thought. I personally thought he would prevail, I've been watching him fight and thought he would rise to the occassion given this great opportunity especially against Navarrete whom I personally enjoy watching but I've always viewed him as a sorta mini Mexican Wilder. He has a very awkward and flawed style but seems to always manage to get the KO win regardless of also I hadn't really seen Navarrete against anyone good since his two fights against Dogboe. All that aside, I give credit were it is due, so Congrats to Navarrete. But I really think Villa had he had perhaps one or two more fights under his belt would've pulled the UD win against him.
