Champion97's picture

Not a very good performance from George Groves to be honest, I expected him to be a lot more impressive, but he got the job done, against a good fighter, and a fighter who was probably better than he had ever been by his own standards, I think moving up a weight really did wonders for Douglin, and when a fighters' mother is smiling in the ring before the fight, that is a real sign of confidence and being in a good place mentally, I thought the first round was just awful from Groves, he had no Rhythm, he was all over the place, I really thought he was going to lose, he looked uptight and tense, he also looked fatigued and weak, Douglin started well, he seemed to counter with success, I actually thought at first that Groves was going to lose, as a Groves fan I was worried, it seemed like the gulf in class between the real Groves and Douglin was what gave him what he needed to have a better second round, still not a great round, but he seemed to clearly just do enough, Douglin seemed to lose more and more confidence round after round, round 3 was anybodys' round really, I gave them each a share in the end, Groves landed the right hand regularly but Douglin was landing good counter punches still, that Groves should not have been getting caught with, he just did not look himself, rounds 4-6 were better for Groves but mainly because of how Douglin was punching himself out, the fight was pretty messy, and Groves was clearly winning these rounds by landing more punches, and discouraging Douglin from unloading any more, and the stoppage was decent, it was a good shot, Groves did get the job done that is the main thing, I thought the main reason Douglin was dropped and stopped is because he was exhausted, and the main reason for this was because he knew he was not winning enough rounds, and he was getting desperate, throwing and missing, and he had nothing left in round 7, Groves finished much the stronger of the two. This was not one of Groves's better performances, but he got the win.
