Titles at Stake:
"For savagery and bruising fighting, virtually all of it displayed by the irrepressible Armstrong, this was a fight that has seldom been excelled. No welterweight, no man near Armstrong's inches or poundage could have survived the blistering firepower." Montanez was down for the first time in his career in the 4th. Down again at the end of the 8th, he had to be carried to his corner. New York Times
Montanez was cut over the right eye in the 3rd round and under the left eye in the 7th round.
Armstrong had expressed his desire to meet three fighters in 1940: Pedro Montanez, http://boxrec.com/media/index.php/Al_(Bummy)_Davis, and middleweight champ, http://boxrec.com/media/index.php/Ceferino Garcia. He met Garcia in his next bout after this Montanez fight, but did not meet Davis until 1944.
