Honor & Glory: Saul Alvarez vs. Erislandy Lara
Fight Notes: Saul Alvarez takes on WBA Super Welterweight Champion Erislandy Lara in a non-title catchweight bout at 155 pounds. Lara starts off strong, schooling Alvarez for portions of the first several rounds; however, Alvarez slows him down with a body assault over the next several. Alvarez produces a cut over Lara's right eye after going after him in the seventh round and continues his attack through the middle rounds, forcing a photo finish down the stretch. After twelve rounds, Alvares ekes out a split decision win in a fight that appears too close to call. |

Re: Canelo Alvarez vs. Erislandy Lara
There should be 5 judges rather than the traditional 3.

Re: Canelo Alvarez vs. Erislandy Lara
I haven't seen the fight so I can't score it because I'm in Germany and there is no boxnation here. I read an article about the fight on the daily mail, it says 'Saul Alvarez escapes with split decision win over Lara'. I can see you disagree with the decision, was it robbery? If so then he needs to to rematch him, one thing I do know is that Alvarez swung a lot of right hands that hit nothing but air in the early rounds. I have said before that there should be more official judges, if it was a fair decision then Lara should rematch Trout.

I wouldn't call it a robbery, but the majority of the people favor Lara. A sample of just 3 persons to score the official result is not significant.

Re: Canelo Alvarez vs. Erislandy Lara
Very interesting fight!
This was a great win for Saul Alvarez, against an underrated, heavy handed, sharp, slick, awkward, skilful Cuban in Erislandy Lara. This was a very close fight, I wouldn't argue with a couple of points either way, the most common score amongst people who saw the fight seems to me to be a draw, and that's how I scored the fight. It was good to see a split decision, but Levi Martinez, well he is a harsh man, Alvarez won, fair enough, but not by 6 points.
I thought Lara was fantastic in this fight, after 3 rounds, it looked like he was going to run away with the fight, when he did the work, he showed sharpness, accuracy, timing, but he didn't throw enough punches, he didn't manage to sustain the activity to out box Canelo in the last 3 quarters of the fight the way he was in the first quarter. Lara is very skilled in the ring, but inactivity is an issue, he lacks the work rate in fights often, he beat Paul Williams, and got hard done by with an unfair, invalid decision, but had he been busier in that fight, the judges may not have gotten it wrong.
I think this footwork of Lara along with his straight shots, gave Alvarez a lot of difficulty, Lara, whilst not having the power to hurt Alvarez, had the power to the extent that Alvarez had troubling walking through his punches, and Lara was able to keep him at distance. Alvarez made the fight very different in round 4, the work to the body, he made it look easy, he didn't let the first three rounds play in his mind, he did a great job of breaking down the distance, landing great body shots. The rounds were very quiet, Lara, defensively awkward throughout, but the body shots knocking steam out of him as the fight went on, his feet slowing down, Canelo seemed to be able to somewhat disallow Lara from throwing punches, and in some rounds, Lara would look great, land some good shots, but for a short amount time, and few of them, while Alvarez might have worked harder throughout the round, landed good enough shots to the body shots, and enough of them to win the round.

Re: Canelo Alvarez vs. Erislandy Lara
He did not clearly win. It was a close fight. I would say 117-111 is too wide of a margin even if it went either way. There's a fine line between boxing and running. Lara was doing both last night. He didn't mount an effective enough offense to win that fight.

Re: Canelo Alvarez vs. Erislandy Lara
A close fight that cannot depend on the judgement of only 3 people. People will argue Lara was backpedaling, while other will argue that Canelo was missing horribly and just hitting Lara's elbows.
The sample responsible for the official result is not relevant to what the majority of the population scored. 5 Judges should be the number of people providing of the official scores in boxing. These would help a lot to reduce controversies.

This is a reply specific to the 5 judges comment. I absolutely, 100% agree! It's feasible and reasonable. This should become the norm.

Re: Canelo Alvarez vs. Erislandy Lara
In my opinion it was a complete robbery. Canelo looked bad swinging rights that either missed or Lara caught on his elbows. Personally I hope there isn't a rematch as there will be the same people judging and the same people promoting. Lara proved all he needed to last night and proved he was the better man.

Re: Canelo Alvarez vs. Erislandy Lara
Well Alvarez whiffs out another BS decision. When Lara fought and engaged in action he clearly won 7 rounds. The only reason I gave Alvarez 5 rounds was because Lara stopped throwing. All judges should be shot, fucking despicable when the money fighter always gets the nod.

Re: Honor & Glory: Saul Alvarez vs. Erislandy Lara
I was 75% correct then, this was an interesting fight, I thought Canelo would stop him, but Lara did really well, there should have been a rematch in my opinion, but there many reasons why there wasn't, Lara, like Rigondeaux, is fantastically skilful, but not appreciated because some people just want to see a brawl, but the millions of fans that can appreciate technical brilliance and fantastic skills are great for the sport, wouldn't Andrade vs Lara be a fantastic fight?

For example we didn't have a rematch on this because of Oscar De La Hoya felt the heat from Lara and he got away with a gift he didn't want to press his luck.

Sorry pal, I don't have the power to do that, but I agree it is right that you and rorschach don't communicate, so you could ask Mario Roberts. I'm not sure why we get emails for every comment now, it didn't used to work that way, it used to be that you only got a notification if the comment was on your card, or it was a reply.
Parker vs Fury? What are your thoughts on that?

Hughie Fury all the way for me and I if he's interested and focused on the task at hand he should not have a lot of problems with Joseph Parker so if Hugie right on the night of the fight it should be easy or at least in my mind he makes it look easy but if he off and not recovered from his acne and other issues and Parker gets inside early on and often it will be close enough for Parker to pull it off but as for me and my pick Team Fury no doubt.

Re: Honor & Glory: Saul Alvarez vs. Erislandy Lara
I must say I feel BAD for Lara! This is the 2nd blatant robbery I see him get the short end of the stick. Mind you this one wasn't as bad as his fight against Williams were I only saw Williams feasibly winning 1 sole round. But, Lara comfortably won 8 rounds here. Canelo has certainly gotten the benefit of the doubt more often than not, must be nice for him.
