Comments

Looks like I'm in before Champ's pre fight summary!

Is it just me that's surprised how big a favourite Yafai is for this fight? Sure, Roman is probably too far up the weights but we're still talking about one of the best little guys of all time. Those loses to Rungvisai don't make him washed up.

I accept he has a lot of miles on the clock but this is a 50/50 fight at best in my opinion.

Prediction,

Gonzalez is a 4 weight champion, was arguably the best fighter in the world, is a level above, he is small at 115, but I don't know if he's simply too small or he just moved up too fast. Gonzalez is very old, he has taken damage, especially in the first Rungvasai fight. Gonzalez hasn't been active, has averaged a fight a year since 2017. Yafai is experienced, was a very good amateur, he has impressed at times, but in his last 2 fights, I thought he was poor. Yafai is naturally bigger, stronger, should hit harder at 115. It will be interesting to see how bad Yafai can hurt Gonzalez with his advantages. Yafai has been aggressive in his last 3 fights, but I think he is a better back foot boxer than a come forward fighter, he did better against Conception and Ishida than against Israel Gonzalez and Jiminez.

Yafai has good fundamentals, is well schooled, but I think size advantage or not, a prime Gonzalez would have easily slipped or walked through his jab, and taken him apart. Gonzalez is offensively brilliant, has a phenomenal output, variety, accuracy, breaks down his opponent, but he fights in the pocket, which cost him against Rungvasai, his style is positive, he can't have the same output he had in his prime, and he can't have the same resistance with the miles he has.

I think Gonzalez's style is bad for Yafai, because Gonzalez is so much offensively better, that he might still get the better of Yafai in the pocket, even with Yafai's advantages, and Gonzalez can cut off the ring, I think the jab is often ineffective against him, he can deal with opponents who move. Yafai might struggle to land the shot he needs to hurt Gonzalez, he might be overwhelmed by the volume of Gonzalez, get backed up, get him clean to head and body, and if Gonzalez can walk him down, it's his fight. I think Yafai should box on the back foot, it will take Gonzalez longer to cut the distance at 32, it is a lower risk strategy, trying to beat Gonzalez at his own fight is a gamble, if he can push Gonzalez back and out fight him, it's his fight to lose, but I don't think he can do that because I think Gonzalez is too experienced a fighter to get bullied by Yafai.

I think this will be a good fight, Yafai will box well in the early rounds, land single shots on the outside, use the ring, but Gonzalez will take over in the mid rounds, get into range, attack in high volume, to head and body, Yafai will rally in the late rounds, Gonzalez will tire, but Yafai won't have it in the tank to take full advantage.

I think Gonzalez wins a UD.

Chocolatito is back!

I thought this was a great fight, but I thought Yafai fought a dumb fight.

Champion97's picture

I think Gonzalez gave him no choice but to fight his fight.

I would agree with that for the last few rounds, but I don't think he needed to right away. Still, good to see Gonzalez look as good as he did.
