Titles at Stake:
On a card designed to produce fireworks by awarding $100,000 to the fighter who scores the night's best knockout, WBC Super Welterweight Champion Saul Alvarez takes out Josesito Lopez. Climbing two weight classes from 140 pounds, Lopez proves unable to withstand the power of Alvarez, who floors him with a left hook to the liver just before the bell to end the second round. Bleeding from the nose and mouth, Lopez is dropped by the same shot in the third. He bravely fights back, but a seven-punch flurry from Alvarez, ending with two right hands to the head, sends Lopez to the canvas for the third time at the end of the fourth. Lopez actually lands some good shots in the fifth round, but Referee Joe Cortez stops the fight a little too early after he takes some unanswered bombs against the ropes. For his efforts, Alvarez earns the $100,000 promised by Golden Boy Promotions.
