Prediction.

It was a bad loss for Warrington last time, it was physically damaging enough to ruin a career, and it was potentially mentally damaging, definitely a challenge mentally, it's an unknown until the fight, whether the first fight has destroyed his confidence and tactical discipline, or if he'll still be confident, more patient and focused this time. If Warrington is shot or hasn't mentally recovered, it's a mismatch, but if not, the fight is interesting. Warrington can't beat Lara by fighting like he did last time, but if he has the right game plan, he has a chance. Lara should be better this time, he's very young, it was a good learning fight for him last time, he'll have the confidence of a fighter who knows he can hold up in the pocket and his opponent can't, and as long as he's prepared for Warrington to make adjustments, has the right game plan himself, that will confidence favour him. Lara proved he was offensively brilliant last time, it wasn't just his power that was Warrington's undoing, he has a lot of offensive attributes, he has a solid chin as well, he's not a fighter any featherweight should fight in the pocket, but his footwork and defence are poor, his style is bad for Warrington, but he isn't well schooled, and Warrington can potentially out box Lara.

I think Warrington will look to establish his jab in the early rounds, will offset Lara, make adjustments with his feet, and Lara will struggle to force the tempo. I think Warrington will jab his way in, attack the body, and pivot, won't throw more than a 4 shot combination at a time, won't load up, and his defence will be better than last time. I think Warrington will give Lara problems, will be ahead after 4 rounds, but his reactions will be slow whenever Lara gets off first, Lara won't be frustrated, and when he times Warrington with a clean counter, Warrington will be hurt even worse than last time, Lara won't need as much volume to knock him down, and Warrington won't survive the follow up.

I'd be surprised if Lara won a decision, because I don't think he can out box Warrington, I'd be shocked if Warrington got a head shot KO or even an accumulative stoppage with head shots, but I wouldn't be shocked if he stopped Lara with damage to the body or won a UD. I think Lara stops Warrington in 6 rounds.

Hypothetical question for you Champ: Would you have made Warrington favourite for the first fight if he took the Lara fight as seriously as he took the Frampton fight?

Champion97's picture

Yes definitely, because if he'd have taken it seriously, he would have seen more of Lara, would have known he was a puncher, would have had a different game plan, but that was a learning fight for Lara, Warrington took 2 sustained beatings, and took punishment in the majority ofthe rounds, he was knocked out heavily as well, it wasn't as damaging as some losses I've seen, but it was definitely enough damage to potentially ruin a career, we can't know until the fight if Warrington has any resistance, and if his reflexes are still there, but I'd lean towards him being damaged, and that's why I think Lara wins again.

beaunuitmem's picture

All fair. I’m thinking that Warrington may still be able to pull it off, even with a little damage but not with any certainty. We’ll Know after we see how well he takes the first couple of big shots.

I'll be impressed if Warrington can out box Lara for 12 rounds without getting smashed. Lara just seems all wrong for him. I'm surprised Warrington is favourite. Lara KO I reckon and possibly send Warrington into retirement.

beaunuitmem's picture

Not saying Lara can't ko Warrington again but it took him 9 rounds to do it against Josh Warrington with Homer Simpson's tactics. I think there would have to be some lasting damage from the last fight, be it mental or physical, for Lara to do it quicker against a Warrington with a proper game plan.

To be fair Warrington should have been pulled out after 5. Furthermore, there's highly likely to be some lasting damage. He just took a complete beating right the way through the fight. I don't think they'll let that happen again. If he gets tagged heavy and put down I imagine the stoppage wouldn't take much longer.

The other school of thought is that he got caught heavy in the 1st and may just never have recovered from it. If that's the case maybe he can outbox him. Lara fought very amateurish in the 1st fight but he's likely to have improved since.

Dont disagree with anything you say just not as sure on the lasting damage. One night to go.

Lucky Warrington. Saved himself from getting sparked again

Warrington was on route to getting stopped again

Very disappointing for everyone, it was unfortunate, terrible cut, no one's fault, but head clashes like that rob fighters of chances to get a career defining win, and cost fighters time out of their careers. It's hard to take much from the 2 rounds, but I think both made adjustments from the first fight, there was more body work from Lara, Warrington was more methodical with his attacks, set up the right hand, took advantage when Lara was on the ropes, didn't oblige him in centre ring. I think Lara had more momentum, Warrington landed a great left hook in the first round, it didn't hurt Lara at all, Lara's shots seemed knock Warrington back and put him on the defensive, and I think Lara wins a third fight.

beaunuitmem's picture

Reluctantly agree unless Warrington on reflection, admits that Lara had the momentum. If you listen to his post-fight interviews, he very honestly says that “he sat down after the first round and thought how did I lose to this guy” and also “I was thinking 5,6,7”; meaning that he thought he was going to ko him mid rounds. What he then never mentioned is that by straying from the tactics after a decent first round, he started losing again. If he doesn’t admit that to himself, he’ll fall into the same trap again.

Yup all the signs were there. In all honesty Lara was getting to him earlier than I expected. I think it's just a case of styles, as I said in an earlier post Lara is just all wrong for him. Warrington just can't avoid being drawn into a scrap. Against a monster puncher that only ends one way.
