More:

Marcos Maidana does exactly as planned by giving Floyd Mayweather Jr. the toughest fight he's seen in years. The match is a brawl, with Floyd against the ropes battling a Maidana flurry from the early rounds to the final bell. With many close rounds, and a post-fight Maidana that says he won, Floyd still looks incredibly sharp, lands clean punches, and takes home the decision.

urgh...for some reason I cannot finish editting my scorecard...115-113 for Mayweather Jr.

Zoe's picture

Did it end up just working again? (I see you have a full card now.) I'm sorry there have been problems. I think the company that hosts this site for us has been making changes to the server, I've been seeing weird errors too and I haven't changed anything. I just opened a service request to see what errors they may be able to find and hopefully fix.

albertocastany's picture

After several tries it was finally posted. No points were awarded, but I ain't a points hoarder :P. I still think your site is awesome anyway.

Zoe's picture

Thanks!!

(I might be able to adjust points after the fact, but not sure. I will at least try.)

Zoe's picture

Added your missing points successfully.

Champion97's picture

I'd be interested to read your opinion on round 5.

albertocastany's picture

I'd need to watch the fight again...even the judges gave that round to Maidna :P

http://www.wbanews.com/wba-scores-analysis?id=282&smonth&syear&date&boxe...

Zoe's picture

That analysis looks very similar to what I have in mind for EOTR fan cards.

Champion97's picture

Do you agree with it?

Zoe's picture

The analysis? First I don't think any of the 'consistency' ratings I've seen given to judges mean a thing. The 'consistency' ratings I've seen measures how consistently a judge agrees with the other judges. A judge (or a fan) needs to judge the fight they see, not the fight they think anyone else is seeing. I think some judges reward clean punches over effective aggression, defense and ring control combined, and other judges might reward strong defense more than others. Maidana showed astonishing aggression, but Floyd is masterful defensively and landed some showy clean punches, I see how he edged it in the eyes of the judges. To be honest, I haven't watched it a second time. I usually don't score a fight multiple times, and when I do, my cards have ended up the same or almost the same the second time around. But anyway, I agree that Floyd edged the win, but barely, and want to watch it again.

Another thing. The fight had a lot of close rounds. I suspect it would be even closer on the scorecards if it was Maidana fighting some nobody.

The kind of analysis I'm planning to add to EOTR is more of a visual distribution of rounds based on fan scores. It would be similar to the data shown in the above link, but mine would be visually laid out in a way that would be much much better to quickly and easily understand.

Champion97's picture

I predict Marcos Maidana to achieve the unthinkable if a Mayweather rematch is to take place later in the year.

Zoe's picture

I agree about the prediction - now that Maidana has had the ring time with Mayweather he should be able to learn enough from that to be stronger on the cards next time. Like you say, he could improve defense. However, Maidana may have good power and timing, but he did look a bit fatigued in the final rounds. He could work on that for the re-match.

Mayweather has always been a defensive fighter and a counter puncher. His defense is amazing. That may seem like not fighting like a man, but his formula consistently wins cards.

If Maidana doesn't get a rematch with Mayweather, who would you like to see him fight?

Zoe's picture

And... I'd much rather see a rematch than Mayweather vs. Khan.

albertocastany's picture

You were right...I think I messed up with the mobile app I was using to keep track of the scorecard.

albertocastany's picture

Well I'm watching it again more carefully (and calmly) and 2 and 3 could have gone for Mayweather as well. Mayweather does get hit but he makes Maidana miss most of the punches or moves away from the fist to dampen the punch. He did manage to nail Maidan with really precise hits particularly in Round 2.

A rematch is necessary...it's just a very close fight

Champion97's picture

I agree with that analysis.

albertocastany's picture

I got Round 8 right

Champion97's picture

This was a great performance from Marcos Maidana, he didn't win, but he made the fight very competitive, I thought it was close, it definitely wasn't one sided, and it is hard to believe that so many experts predicted this one to be a mismatch.

albertocastany's picture

I still reckon a draw or barely a win for Mayweather Jr is the most fair result. Being honest, the margin should have been wider in favor of Mayweather and not exactly for winning close rounds. Maidana was boxing dirty. Yes, it's a fight and yes it's a tactic. However, stepping out of the line has its consequences. I think Maidana should have been deducted 2 points during the fight.

what_is_the_default_password's picture

Mayweather was no saint himself with all the elbows, forearms and head-pulling. Furthermore his characteristic extremely bladed stance tends to expose the back of the head when he rolls under punches, so no surprise Maidana landed a few rabbit punches (intentional or not). It is hardly fair to deduct points from Maidana when Mayweather is not penalised for these 'grey-area' tactics. The low blows were quite blatant though.

albertocastany's picture

1. This is a fight with an extremely polarized result. Debating is expected. I've expressed my opinion and its foundation. I don't see how you feel disrespected about it. Don't lose the ground, mate.

2. I'm mexican, I train 5 to 6 days a week, and I love the sweet science. I understand what I'm talking about.

3. You have to fight smart. Do you really think Mayweather couldn't have escaped from the ropes? He was there because he wanted to be there. He was sort of Rope-a-dope'ing Maidana. Of course, Floyd underestimated Maidana stamina, his critical thinking and dirty tactics. That's the answer to why the fight was so close.

4. The rematch is the best thing to happen. A few more rounds should help to settle this.

5. Man...you type..a lot. Take it easy.

Champion97's picture

Although Maidana didn't win this fight, he came closer to doing just that than any of Mayweather's other opponents (with the exception of the two who could have had valid cases built for them to have beaten Floyd).

It was only about Maidana being disrespected, no worries, I know you have him his due credit.

It has been pointed out so many times, by so many people, that Maidana's tactics were dirty, but he was never malicious, his wayward style creates the danger that some shots are going to stray below the belt, or be misplaced onto the top or even back of the head of Mayweather. I noticed Mayweather using the elbow, which is a deliberately dirty tactic, he is very intelligent, and his spiteful, illegal tactics were well masked.

albertocastany's picture

trying to answer as briefly as possible

* It's fair to say Maidana could have won the fight. Lots of rounds were very close, and different people will favor different styles. I wouldn't score more than 8 round either way though. That's what I like about this site, you can share your thoughts with other fans.

* Floyd does use his elbows during fights, but to his credit he's learned not to abuse from them. If I'm not wrong, I remember he was deducted a point against Castillo, and in another fight as well, for abusing dirty tricks.

* There's no country in prizefighting. Saul Alvarez doesn't represent Mexico, and I think he is just a decent fighter with a big marketing behind him. I had Trout winning his fight against Canelo. I'm excited about watching Lara against him :)

* "Boxing is like jazz. The better it is, the less people appreciate it" G.F. --I personally like the out-boxing style. Having said so...my fav fight is Gatti Vs. Ward 1. It's all about domination within the ring.

* I'll try to read your comment on Khan Vs Floyd. Best of lucks in your fight. Amateur or Pro?

albertocastany's picture

I only do sparring. I've only had one amateur fight. It's really hard to engage in a battle, and work at the office the next day. You should watch Gatti vs Ward. It's not the typical fight I enjoy the most, but a is the king of the slugfests. On Jim Lampley's words "We told you this fight would be a candidate for fight of the year, we didnt know it would be a candidate for fight of the century".

I think Lara will "upset" Canelo. Lara had a harder time to defeat El Perro than Canelo, but in no way El Perro looked the same as in the Lara fight. I credit Canelo for taking chances, but I just don't think he's won all of his decision fights and he's face opposition on the downhill. What I'm trying to say is that although Canelo is good, I think he might be overrated.

I cannot say a lot about Kell Brook. I've seen little from him. I'm more familiar with shawn porter. He doesn't bring anything great to the fight, but he has these random tempo changes that surprise his opponents. He goes from a reserved jab fighter into a wild club swinging machine. It'd be interesting to see what kind of fighter can be clever enough to control Porter.

albertocastany's picture

I've seen Rod Salka fight once I think, in a fight he won vs one of Canelo's brother Ricardo, but the judges gave the decision to Alvarez...in Texas...enough said. I didnt see anything amazing in Salka anyway.

I'm not sure why Danny Garcia is fighting him. Sometimes is a matter of not having decent opponents in the division, and sometimes is just about the money issue. I think Danny is asking now big numbers for his guaranteed purse. Facing Salka (who isn't even ranked in the top 10 of any sanctioning body) is just an economic decision, while keeping Danny busy.

I don't care about Broner. He might be getting easy fights that will develop his name... I think he is actually facing Zab Judah whom has become a stepstone. I really hope Matthysse gets into decent fights...he is still the best contender out there. I would actually prefer to watch a Garcia vs Matthysse 2 rather than a Garcia vs Herrera 2.

albertocastany's picture

I prefer the outboxing style, but it's all a matter of ring domination and technique. Both Garcia and Matthysse are both very technical fighters. That's one of the reason the fight was very exciting, with an unpredictable result.

What I like about Garcia is that he is a multi-dimensional fighter. He might not be the best at something, but he is good all-around. By not excelling in something in particular, Danny wins his fights sometimes in a blemished way, but he gets the job done. When Danny fought Matthysse, he stayed on the outside, moved around and exchanged when necessary. Plus, he can really exploit flaws and vulnerabilities of his opponents.

On the other hand you have Matthysse. He is a very methodic slugger, and picks his shots really good. Sluggers are usually referred as swinging brawlers, but nowadays we have a good generation of sluggers, and Lucas is one of them. He might not be as technical as Golovkin in this style, but he has a good attributes for this style. He's got this terrific body rotation and delivers powerful shots. Maybe the heaviest hands P4P. Danny should get some credit for taking those shots (http://youtu.be/km32TXttaGU)

Like I said...I don't care about Broner. Not worth talking any more about him.

I really looking forward to see how Mayweather vs Maidana undercard will look like. TMT will stick to work along with GB, so they might pack it well.

albertocastany's picture

1. Any intentional foul deserves a point deduction. I think Danny Garcia only hit Matthysse deliberately in the last round. During the fight I think he just hit him another time, and I believe his punch was being deflected. Theres the difference.

2. Chris Eubank Jr should start seeing better opposition, so he could show his real talent. They should try to market him in America.

3. I think DeGale is underrated. No better way to display his grit that facing the most fearsome fighter there is.

4. The only opponents whom I think would make Wlad struggle are: a) Vitali b) Wilder. The Klitschkos are just too good for their division.

albertocastany's picture

Where's Frankie Gavin in this list? :P

It's interesting how there is only 2 10's across the average scorecard board. and they are both to maidana.

BoxNationscores12's picture

Maidana, did he do enough to win the fight? not at all, it was either 9-3, or 8-4.

Something seemed off with Mayweather in this fight, I've never seen him seem so exhausted in a post fight interview in all the Mayweather fights I've seen, and in those last 2 rounds, even though Floyd won them, you just got that sense that he wasn't his usual self in the ring. Although Floyd Mayweather won the fight, and he did win it, he did not look right tonight.

Before the fight, did I think Maidana was going to win?, I doubted it, did I think he was going to push the fight?, 100%.

what_is_the_default_password's picture

Very entertaining and competitive fight.

Early on Maidana threatened with his jabs, changed elevations and Mayweather knew Maidana was aiming for an overhand right (in response Mayweather put up a high guard); Maidana knew Mayweather knew and thus was able to pressure him to the ropes and maul him (Mayweather did not back into the ropes on his own accord). However, Mayweathe was so slick Maidana could not sustain his offense well even at the ropes (especially in the later rounds), while at the centre of the ring Maidana stood no chance against Mayweather's superior counter-punching.

Some interesting adjustments Mayweather made in the later rounds:
1. Early on Maidana avoided Mayweather's counter left hook by rolling underneath it, later in the bout when Maidana does it again Mayweather quickly nailed him with a lightning quick right cross.

2. When driven to the ropes Mayweather appears to circle somewhat to his left and ends up in a southpaw stances, as a result Maidana's head becomes right in the line of fire of Mayweather's left cross and Maidana was reluctant to charge in like he did earlier (the lead foot thing in Orthodox vs Southpaw also made charging in harder).

3. I'm not sure whether it is in this fight or in their second one but when Maidana threw the overhand right Mayweather actually sticks out his left hand to parry/block it to reduce the punch's power in case it did land. Usually Mayweather tucks his left close to his body in his crab stance.

The most amazing thing about Floyd Mayweather is how he had always adjusted and found a way to win, though I personally scored this fight a draw. Even if you consider it a win for Mayweather, it is a very narrow victory and nowhere as lopsided as two of the the official scorecards suggested.
