Prediction,

I don't like Gary Russell Jr, he is wasted talent, fighting once a year is a joke. Russell fighting once a year is not as bad when he takes a tough fight, like the Diaz fight, but even then, it is poor, but Gonzalez, Escandon, Martinez, are tune up opponents for a fighter of Russell's level, so just fighting one of them in a whole year is very poor.

Martinez was not bad in his prime, but against Frampton, Quigg, Santa Cruz, he lost, and was levels below his opponent, no reason why this fight won't be the same. Martinez is past his best, he is old at 33, he is not a fresh fighter, 8 losses, been in a good 5 damaging fights, he will probably be worse than he was against Santa Cruz.

This should not go 6 rounds, Russell is a good starter, front runner, hits hard, has extremely fast hands, is explosive, this could end early, but Martinez is durable, Russell might take a few rounds to pick him apart.

I think Russell stops Martinez in 6.

Why is the WBC making Russell fight Martinez instead of Nyambayar?

Soft stoppage in my opinion, if a fighter's vision is at risk or the cut puts his well being at risk, can't complain about the stoppage, but if it is just a nasty one, might scar for life, the fight should not be stopped, this is boxing, but the doctor knows if a cut puts a fighter's vision at risk or anything. Tough one for Martinez being stopped on a cut, always a pity when that happens in boxing, but he tried his best.

Russell is a very talented fighter, but he is bad for boxing, he probably won't fight again this year, I don't think he wants to fight Leo Santa Cruz, he is probably more than happy to keep fighting once a year, keep taking advantage of being allowed to fight once a year and keep his belt. Russell should be ordered to fight Nyambayar, he is a worthy mandatory, and Russell shouldn't get away with holding the belt hostage.
