Re: James Toney vs. Mike McCallum I
Toney dealt another lery decision, yes it was a close fight but Toney clearly won imo.

Re: James Toney vs. Mike McCallum I
I would not call this decision leery. The fight was very competitive and ridiculously hard to score, as a result the judges' scores vary wildly. In my opinion, Toney only appears to be clearly winning in the 12th round, where McCallum was tired and wobbled (and even then Toney still ate shots from McCallum). Almost every other rounds are razor-close toss-ups.

I'll have to watch this one again in the future.
A couple rounds could have gone either way, but I don't think this fight was that close.
The strangest thing to me was Toney's own corner told him he was losing, I thought he was winning (and won) comfortably.

Re: James Toney vs. Mike McCallum I
I disagree on Toney winning comfortably. It was a see-saw battle all the way till the end. I could not help but feel that the TVKO broadcasters spent too much time highlighting Toney's counters, and overlooked McCallum's shorter, less eye-catching counter-shots (especially counter-shots to the body, those are the easiest to miss)
If I was Toney's cornerman, I would have told Toney the same thing. A super-close fight like this should not be left to the decision, but Mike was too good to be knocked out even if he was tired.

I watched twice the match, both times with no audio. Both times i scored it 9-3 rounds for Toney. Lights Out won clearly: some rounds was close but not only between those in Toney's favor.

Poor McCallum got stripped for facing Toney and he failed to convince more than one judge that he deserved Toney's belt.
McCallum was left belt-less but boxing fans got one of the finest fights in the recent decades.

Re: James Toney vs. Mike McCallum I
This wasn't a robbery, per se: anyone who follows boxing has seen much, much worse. Still, it's hard to come up with a way to score this without Toney winning by at least two rounds (I had him winning by 3). Toney hurt McCallum badly, in three rounds while there were very few rounds that scored easily for McCallum (the 9th, in which Toney took a breather, was one). After the 6th McCallum was sucking air and his punches had lost most of their pop. Toney later sent his mouthpiece sailing, possibly because of a damaged nose: usually guys get their mouthpieces knocked out because they have to breath through their mouths and can't bite down. If McCallum outlanded Toney it was only due to a much higher number of jabs - Toney had more power connects and much the much heavier hands. Of course, Toney could have made it easier on himself by not headhunting; he had a good number of wild misses and if he had gone to the body instead, McCallum probably wouldn't have made it to the final bell. The fact is: McCallum spent much of second half of the fight in retreat. In the first rematch, McCallum kept to that strategy and rarely closed with Toney - he understood he couldn't stand and trade with Toney who, when he wasn't drained from shucking pounds, was one of the strongest middleweights in boxing history. You couldn't hurt him at 160 (or 168) but he could sure hurt you.
Toney has said that McCallum was his toughest opponent, and the one he learned the most from.

Re: James Toney vs. Mike McCallum I
This was an edge of your seat battle between two of the most underrated boxers in history.
It was tactical and smartly fought, but never boring. It was all action from bell to bell, and a great great fight.
