Gold's picture

This fight is in serious jeopardy, Prograis and his team filed a lawsuit against Comosa AG/WBSS to be released from his contract. Rumor is that if Prograis is released from his WBSS obligations, he could sign with Top Rank which could line him up for Ramirez and Crawford.

SalTnutZ1's picture

Heard the same. Can get more money and chances at legit 140lb king by signing with TR. Could happen the day the litigation completes, should he win.

Champion97's picture

That's a damn shame, defeats the whole purpose of a tournament.

Champion97's picture

Prediction,

In terms of who's done what, it's interesting, you can make an argument for either. Prograis has been more dominant, his career has been easy, but I think Taylor has the better resume, beat Baranchyk and Postol.

Prograis stopped Indongo, and even earlier than Crawford, he's beaten 3 former world champions, so he doesn't have a bad resume himself, but I don't think Prograis has fought a top 50 fighter in his prime, and Taylor did that against Baranchyk. I think Relikh is limited, Flanagan was never that good, and was coming off the Hooker loss, and Indongo was coming off a bad loss to Crawford.

Prograis beat Indongo even earlier and more easily than Crawford, an old Indongo, but Postol was old when he fought Taylor, and that was a tough fight for Taylor, didn't nearly match Crawford's performance against Postol. I don't think Postol is necessarily better than Indongo, Postol beat Matthysse, Lundy, but I think he was overrated before he fought Crawford, and Indongo beat Burns and Troyanovsky with ease.

There isn't much in it for power, but Prograis seems likely to have a power edge. Neither fighter has been down, neither have been in against a good fighter who can hit that hard, but both seem to have good chins. Prograis has had more fights, but Taylor had a better amateur career, Prograis was in the Olympic trials, but Taylor was a 2012 Olympian, was in 2 other world tournaments, beat Horn, Herring, and Conceicao, had a couple of WSB fights. I think Taylor is more experienced overall. Both are southpaws. Taylor has fought 1 southpaw in his last 5 fights, only 2 definite southpaws in his career, Prograis has fought 2 southpaws in his last 5 fights, at least 3 southpaws in his career. Prograis and Taylor have both stopped southpaws early in their last 3-4 fights, but Prograis's went 12 rounds against Flanagan, so the stance aspect favours Prograis.

I think Prograis needs to be patient, throw more shots as the rounds go on, try to cut off the ring before throwing anything, focus more on attacking the body than the head in the early rounds, and if he has Taylor on the ropes, he shouldn't load up, just be consistent, don't let Taylor escape.

Taylor needs to use his feet, he can't go back in straight lines, he needs lateral movement, and he has to stay off the ropes. Taylor's inside game will be tested, it will be interesting to see if he can fight in the pocket, when Prograis has him on the ropes, but if he can attack head and body in close quarters, and spin off the ropes, not give Prograis the ground he needs, to attack, then he has a very good chance of winning.

Taylor proved against Baranchyk, that he can do more damage without being the aggressor, he wasn't the aggressor, but he dropped him twice. Prograis is aggressive, like Baranchyk, is a come forward fighter, hits harder, but he doesn't have that output, and although he is a very good pressure fighter, Prograis, Taylor proved last time, he can win rounds and do damage, under relelntless pressure. I think Prograis hits harder than any of Taylor's previous opponents, and Prograis has some skills, hasn't shown brilliant defence, but his defence isn't bad, he judges distance, attacks the body, is accurate, good timing, is a great offensive fighter, but he has slow feet, and that's a problem against Taylor.

I think early, Taylor will beat Prograis to the punch, will throw a combination whenever Prograis relents, Prograis will struggle with the range because of Taylor's reach but also his foot speed and his ability to box on the outside. I think once Prograis has caught Taylor, he can walk him down, attack head and body, but I don't think he will stop Taylor, because I think Taylor will know how to survive, and Prograis will punch himself out if he takes the gamble of going for the finish. I might be wrong, because if Taylor's legs are gone, and Prograis can be patient without letting him off, can cut off the ring, and get back into range, he can stop Taylor.

I think this fight will go more Prograis's way as it goes on, I think Taylor will have a good start, but as Prograis gets closer to the target, throws more shots, slows Taylor down, he will take over the fight, I think he will do all the damage, and I don't think Taylor can stop him doing what he needs to do to win.

I think overall, although he is not the faster, might not be the better technical fighter, Prograis is the better offensive fighter overall, hits harder. Prograis was not challenged at all against Indongo, not much against Flanagan, Taylor was more than challenged against Postol. I think Prograis wins a UD, I think it will be a very good fight, competitive, Taylor will show a lot of grit, will start well, but Prograis will take over the fight, and it won't be a controversial decision, maybe fairly wide.

FOTY Candidate for sure! Seriously, I think this topped Spence-Porter.

What a fight! One of the best of the year, no doubt, seen some great fights in this last month, this might be the best.

I didn't expect Taylor to fight that well on the inside, and he was the stronger fighter, I thought Prograis would be the one doing the damage, but although he has a good chin, Taylor proved he does as well, took Prograis's best shots clean, and he took a toll on Prograis, did more damage.

This was by far the best we've ever seen from Taylor, I think he's improved a lot, his fights against Postol and Baranchyk were the making of him, and the Ramirez unification would be a great fight. A rematch might be possible, this was a classic fight, Prograis probably raised his stock in defeat, I thought it was a close fight, Prograis showed a lot of heart, and a lot of skill, brilliant head movement, good jab, great combination puncher, great variety, but he was just beat by the better fighter.

Apparently Polanco (who scored the fight 115-113 Taylor) scored the last round to Taylor which swung it from a majority draw to a majority decision for Taylor. 12/13 cards here so far scored the 12th to Prograis

WBSS doesn't do draws, someone would have won regardless

Someone (Taylor) would have won the tournament because of that but the recorded commission result would have been a draw.

Well I thought he won anyway so I don't have a problem with that. Didn't know that part, if its correct. Just knew they had a 4th judge there in case of a draw

Fair enough if you thought he won, just pointing out an interesting bit from the scorecards.

Pretty poor card then, but at least it was in the right man's favor. The biggest swing round was 3. I had it for prograise, yet had Taylor winning 7-5. Think in a case where most agree the acceptable score range is 114 114 to 116 112 Taylor, itt is a better result for Taylor to win.
