Re: Oleksandr Usyk vs Chazz Witherspoon
Prediction,
I think there is an extreme difference in calibre, Usyk was the undisputed champion at 200, fought world champions in his last 3 fights, Witherspoon has never even beaten a former world champion. For experience, it's interesting, Usyk has only had 16 fights, Witherspoon has had 41, but although Witherspoon was the Golden Gloves champion in 2004, he has no other amateur highlights, and Usyk had a long career in the unpaid ranks, was a phenomenal amateur, and has a fair bit of WSB experience. As well as having far more pre professional experience, and having the pedigree as a professional, Usyk has been 12 rounds 4 times, Witherspoon has never been 12 rounds.
Usyk is still young, Witherspoon is old at 38. Usyk hasn't been down, only seen him briefly hurt once, he hasn't taken much damage, Witherspoon doesn't have a lot of miles, but certainly more than Usyk, he's been stopped twice, down 5 times, was in a FOTY candidate in 2008. Usyk has never had a heavyweight bout that wasn't just slightly over the cruiserweight limit, his last 7 fights have been cruiserweight world title fights. Usyk is taking a risk by moving up, but it is a chance for him to seal his legacy as a great fighter on a higher level. Usyk is big at 200, 6'3 is not small, his movement and boxing skills might make him seem less strong than he is at 200, bar Breidis, I think he was the stronger fighter in all his fights, and he isn't 100% without experience fighting heavyweights, some of his early fights were over the cruiserweight limit, and more importantly, he fought Joyce, and several other heavyweights in the WSB.
Usyk hasn't fought in 11 months, there might be some ring rust, and Witherspoon fought 7 months ago, but overall, Usyk has been the more active fighter, and even if it is a minor issue for Usyk, it is likely to be more of an issue for Witherspoon. Usyk hasn't fought this year, but he fought 3 times last year, twice in 2016 and 17, Spong's last fight went 2 rounds, still a fight, but he came off a year out, and came off 15 months out in the fight before his last, so he didn't fight in 2017, has has averaged one fight a year over the last 3 years.
Usyk is possibly naturally bigger than Frazier, Holyfield, I think if they can do well at heavyweight, so can Usyk, but as a professional, Usyk has not weighed in at or fought an opponent who weighed in at more than 209, and Witherspoon is between 220 and 240, not a big heavyweight, but not a small heavyweight. The weight aspect is what makes this fight interesting, other than professional fight count, it is only thing significantly in Witherspoon's favour, but with a significant size advantage, he'll be confident he can win.
It will be interesting to see how Usyk deals with this being his first heavyweight fight. I think Usyk needs at least heavyweight 2 fights, possibly 3 fights, before he can fight for the title, because he needs time to build into the division, but also so he gets the experience of fighting heavyweights. I think Witherspoon hits harder than any of Usyk's previous opponents, Usyk has fought big cruiserweights in his last few fights, fought punchers, but Witherspoon is a big puncher at heavyweight, he has a higher KO ratio than any of Usyk's former opponents (although his edge on Briedis KO percentage wise is extremely small), so it will be interesting to see, if Witherspoon lands clean early, how Usyk takes it.
I think Usyk will be very cautious early, I think he will be out weighed by 20-25lbs, will back up, but will be patient, wait for Witherspoon to throw, and he'll counter. I think lack of speed will make it tough for Witherspoon to get the momentum, early, because he won't be able to land clean, make Usyk feel his power, because Usyk will see the right hand coming, will land clean, sharp shots off the back foot, in variety, will be a lot more unpredictable than Witherspoon, although Usyk will need more volume against a bigger opponent, to do the same damage and take the same toll he has in the past.
I think Witherspoon will start to tire after 4 rounds, will be less of a threat, Usyk will make him pay whenever he takes a backward step or takes a breather, and it will become more one sided, Usyk will pick up the pace, be more aggressive, land clean to head and body in volume, for 2 or 3 one sided rounds, break Witherspoon down, take him apart, and stop him in 7 or 8 rounds.

I think Usyk is going to carry him for a few rounds. He needs rounds because he has almost been out for a year.

Definitely possible, but I think he could also blow him out and have a quick turn around for his next fight.

Re: Oleksandr Usyk vs Chazz Witherspoon
Hopefully. This is a pointless fight. Not a real test to see how Usyk can do at Heavyweight. Takam would have been solid. But I prefer someone with the size of a Wilder, Fury and Joshua. Someone tall like Helenius or Gerald Washington.
Eddie ain't really delivering the fights for Bivol or Usyk... hopefully Joshua wins the rematch and that fight happens. Because I see Andy Ruiz not fighting Usyk and vacating the WBO if he wins the rematch.

Re: Oleksandr Usyk vs Chazz Witherspoon
What would you make of Usyk vs. Wallin? I think I heard he may be signing to Top Rank though.
Yeah, this Chicago card is terrible. Eddie needs to get Usyk moving, he's "only" 32 as a heavyweight but he does rely on athleticism and movement. Joshua vs. Usyk would be good but a huge step up for Usyk. I think Ruiz would vacate the WBO as well, based on the rankings I wouldn't be surprised if that resulted in Joshua vs. Usyk as well. I heard Bivol's contract with Matchroom was ending or close to ending, but that was before he signed to this fight. If Eddie can't make Smith vs. Bivol for him (or even BJS vs. Bivol), Bivol should definitely leave to PBC.

Re: Oleksandr Usyk vs Chazz Witherspoon
Wallin would be a solid test for Usyk and it would give the fans a common opponent with Tyson Fury to compare him with. But stylistically I don't think it's a good learning fight for Usyk. None of the top Heavyweights fight like Wallin and he is a southpaw as well. Wallin is tough, so it probably goes all 12. I don't think Usyk would be in any risk of losing tho
You said Bivol should go to PBC? Nah man. Unless he wants to fight at 168. He has a belt at Light Heavyweight now. The other 3 champions are over at Top Rank. If Kovalev loses to Canelo he will fight on DAZN after I heard...so that's an option for Bivol at DAZN. There is also Danny Jacobs, Canelo along with Callum Smith and Saunders...but I doubt those guys are interested in fighting Bivol.
I think Bivol should leave DAZN if he isn't getting the fights and unify at Top Rank with Gvozdyk/Beterbiev or fight someone like Hart or Gilberto Ramirez. Ramirez might get his hands on that WBO title if Canelo beats Kovalev and vacates it. I don't think going to PBC would be a great option unless he wants to campaign at 168. I doubt the champs at 168 would be eager to fight Bivol as well, so he would again be struggling to find opponents and even stay active at PBC. What do you think?

Re: Oleksandr Usyk vs Chazz Witherspoon
Agreed that it isn't a good learning fight, but I think Wallin's size and body attack would give him some difficulty. If he takes a fight in the interim before challenging for the WBO I think Parker would be a good challenge.
Yes, because he has said he would be open to moving down. Otherwise, I agree he should go to Top Rank. It's time for Bivol to move up in class though, if Kovalev loses and fights on DAZN that doesn't progress his career to where it should be. Maybe I am being too optimistic about Smith and Saunders, there isn't really a financial incentive to fighting Bivol and it would be a very hard fight for them. The one thing I'll say about Callum Smith is he has been unhappy with Eddie for not getting him bigger fights and stayed with Matchroom I assume with the promise he'll get bigger fights which from a skill level Bivol is. I don't think Canelo is an option at all either. Yeah, I definitely think that is Arum's plan if Canelo wins Ramirez can get an easy vacant title opportunity. The reason I didn't mention TR is I hadn't heard anything about him going to TR as a possibility when him leaving Matchroom was discussed, which I thought was odd but perhaps circumstances have changed. I think Al could make the fights happen at 168 if he went to PBC because he's good at providing financial incentive, but Bivol needs quality opponents not just more activity in my view.

Re: Oleksandr Usyk vs Chazz Witherspoon
Bivol hasn't had a big fight of the magnitude of Gvozdyk vs Beterbiev, Stevenson vs Gvozdyk, Kovalev vs Canelo, but his opposition has been good overall, and we know Pascal isn't shot, I think the big fights will come, but I agree if he signs with Top Rank, that makes sense because that's where the other light heavyweight champs are. Bivol against Smith on DAZN at 168 would be great as well, there aren't a lot of fights for Smith, Hearn hasn't done a good job of promoting Smith, that fight makes sense for him as well, but that fight could also happen at 175, it's probably Smith's natural weight class, he can't make 168 for much longer, surely. If Canelo beats Kovalev, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw Bivol or Smith vs Canelo at 168, Canelo is very small at 175, Canelo knows Bivol at 175 is realistically a fight he'd struggle to win, but if he gains muscle mass for the Kovalev fight, he might not go straight back down to 160.

Heard they may be trying to angle Callum for a shot at the WBC belt as a mando since he’s held and defended their Diamond belt for so long. I know we don’t often see champs become mandatories in another body, but WBC has done it once at least recently, so not out of the question.

Yeah, I had heard that as well, it seems more likely after Yildirim failed his test but Al has a good relationship with the WBC so we'll see. Smith vs. Benavidez would be an intriguing fight for sure.

Re: Oleksandr Usyk vs Chazz Witherspoon
It's good for him to get experience but he's had five title defenses, it's time to move up the quality of opposition past contender level guys. I would be surprised if we saw Bivol or Smith vs. Canelo, both would be extremely hard fights for him to win. I wouldn't be as surprised if we saw Canelo vs. Saunders at Super Middleweight, but I believe Canelo has said he's willing to go back to Middleweight to defend his title, so we'll see.

Re: Oleksandr Usyk vs Chazz Witherspoon
I agree he should be in a big fight next year. Cutting to 168 seems like a big ask, even if he isn't big at 175, but fighters have done crazier things, I don't see those fights as unrealistic, maybe unwise for Bivol, but realistic. It depends on how much mass he gains for the Kovalev fight, because if he puts on 5 or more lbs of muscle, it will be hard to make 160 again in his next fight, but he isn't big at 160, so it's possible he'll come down to 160, I suppose it depends on how he does he the weight for the Kovalev fight, and which division the highest reward fights are in both financially and legacy wise.

Calling it now, Usyk vs. Parker/Whyte for the vacant WBO next. In house for Eddie

Not saying I would be surprised if it happened, but if I were Usyk, I'd want at least one fight against a top 15 heavyweight before fighting a Whyte or Parker.

Yeah, that would make sense, but Eddie is making it seem like it'll be next and he's the WBO mandatory.

I think if AJ wins the Rematch he will make Joshua Vs Usyk. If Ruiz wins he vacates the WBO so yeah Usyk will probably fight someone for it, could be Whyte or Parker

Re: Oleksandr Usyk vs Chazz Witherspoon
It doesn't really make sense for Eddie to do that in my opinion because the winner of Joshua vs. Ruiz II is going to have to drop either the IBF or the WBO because of conflicting mandatories. If Joshua does fight Usyk then he will have to vacate the IBF to be fought between Pulev (TR) and Kownacki (PBC), where if AJ takes the IBF mandatory in Pulev the vacant WBO will likely be fought between two Matchroom fighters (Usyk vs. Parker/Whyte) and Eddie can match AJ versus the winner

Yup but the WBO might be lenient and let Joshua fight Pulev without stripping him if he wins the rematch. But definitely a good point

Re: Oleksandr Usyk vs Chazz Witherspoon
We're talking from different standpoints, you're talking from a promotional standpoint, I mean what I would do if I were Usyk. I agree Hearn will do what he thinks is best for Matchroom first and foremost. I think Joshua will vacate the WBO if he has to, because he he said he wants a tune up after the Ruiz rematch, Hearn has even suggested he might retire after the rematch, win or lose, but if Joshua wants to a tune up, that's more likely to be Pulev than Whyte, Parker, Usyk, which I suppose backs up what you say about Usyk fighting Whyte or Parker, but can the fight (Joshua vs Usyk) not still happen, and be built up?, because Usyk against the winner of Chisora vs Price would still be a big fight, but I suppose the WBO belt makes the Whyte fight a fight worth taking for Usyk.

I think Joshua is unlikely to fight Usyk after Ruiz if he wins, I think he will fight Pulev, he's said he wants an easier fight after Ruiz.

Re: Oleksandr Usyk vs Chazz Witherspoon
Great performance from Usyk!
Ring rust wasn't an issue for Usyk, the first round was close, Usyk was cautious, probably felt the power slightly when he got hit, needing to mentally prepare to risk getting hit by heavyweight, but it got more and more one sided, Usyk's blocking abilities, footwork, great, Witherspoon couldn't hit him, Usyk was countering him, the jab of Usyk is brilliant, it's fast, very accurate, doesn't over reach with it, it's a jolting jab as well. Usyk landed the left to the body, he was wary of the right hand counter of Witherspoon, but that shot took a lot out of Witherspoon. Usyk didn't get careless, didn't get frustrated about needing more time to break Witherspoon down, he just broke him down round by round, kept backing him up in rounds 4-7, and I think the fight was stopped at the right time.
I definitely think Usyk will be top 2 at heavyweight, he might even be the best in the division in a year or two. I wouldn't mind seeing Usyk against the winner of Chisora vs Price next.

Re: Oleksandr Usyk vs Chazz Witherspoon
So I finally got around to watch this. The truth is I lost massive interest on this fight. Not entirely Usyk's fault. I get things happen in boxing. My issue was the choice for replacement especially after names like Charles Martin, Joey Dawejko, Frank Sanchez Faure, and Jermaine Franklin were being considered by the Usyk camp whom imho were far more suitable replacements for Tyrone Spong than Chazz Witherspoon. This fight really didn't prove anything because from the looks of it Chazz was doing this as a favor and he did put a professional effort knowing he had no chance of winning rounds against Usyk so he was just looking to land a big shot. Usyk seemed like he was trying to get some rounds in. He didn't look that much different than he did at cruiserweight maybe a tad bit slower.
