After the ridiculously high standards set by Nunn in his previous bout, a shocking opening round, one punch KO of the sublime Sumbu Kalambay, he couldn’t help but disappoint against rugged warhorse Barkley. Nevertheless, the reigning champ’s hand and foot speed won through against the typically determined challenge from ‘The Blade’.

Nunn’s fantastic natural reflexes allowed him to evade the majority of Barkley’s output, even on the inside, which is surprisingly impressive for a man of Nunn’s physical dimensions. However, his penchant for falling in love a little too much with his defence was again apparent here which, coupled with his probable underestimation of Barkley’s abilities, made several rounds much more competitive than necessary. That being said, to grant Barkley more than 4 rounds against the super slick Nunn is simply over generous charity.

When the defending champ did get on his toes, Barkley was generally left swinging and missing, and getting popped by that southpaw jab, but it didn’t always make for the greatest spectacle. Perhaps a clue as to why some observers, including the official judges, elected to score the bout much closer than it should have been.
