Prediction,

Canelo has more skills than Kovalev, he can fight on the inside, Kovalev can't, he has much more variety, is offensively better overall, and defensively better, has phenomenal head movement, but Kovalev certainly has the better jab, and he hits harder at 175 than Canelo does at 160, so to say he is the puncher in this fight, is an understatement.

Canelo is younger, fresher, and his pound for pound ranking is much higher than Kovalev's. I think Canelo's style is terrible for Kovalev, because Canelo is an exceptional body puncher, and Kovalev is known specifically for being weak to the body.

Canelo's natural weight is 154-160, he's small at 168, so he's very small at 175. Canelo took time to adapt to 160, he'd need time to adapt to 168, I think he could, but I think he's too small for 175. 175 is Kovalev's career weight, all his title fights have been at 175. Canelo is at a big size disadvantage.

There is a 10lb rehydration limit, Canelo is being accused of taking away Kovalev's size advantage, because this is 10lbs is not a lot of allowance for a light heavyweight, but based on Kovalev's past fights, he doesn't need more than 10lbs to be fully rehydrated, I don't think weight draining Kovalev is Canelo's intention, if he wanted to do that, this would be at a catchweight, but Kovalev can't build on his size advantage by making himself heavy carry extra weight to use against Canelo in the late rounds by leaning on him, which is an effective tactic for a tiring, bigger fighter.

Canelo will lessen the strength difference if he gains more muscle mass, but for stamina, that's very unwise, it will also rule out a return to 160 next year, and it won't give him power, Kovalev will tire after 8 rounds if not earlier, but Canelo will struggle to build on that, anywhere near as well as Ward did, if he is also gassed from carrying too much unnatural weight, I think he's better off being closer to his natural size, take the big size and strength difference for 6 rounds, but be more mobile, and prioritise taking full advantage of the late rounds, which are certainly not Kovalev's territory.

It's interesting to comapre this fight to Golovkin vs Canelo. Kovalev can hit Canelo a lot harder than Golovkin, is stronger, both have great jabs, but Kovalev has more reach, but Kovalev has a lot more vulnerabilities, and I think he is less versatile.

Kovalev fought and took damage recently, I think a 6 week camp isn't enough, he'll have started camp in good shape, so you could argue the short time between fights is good for him if anything, but I disagree.

Kovalev is a top level puncher, punchers have failed to hurt Canelo, but I think Kovalev hits harder in his own division than Canelo's previous opponents' in their divisions. The combination of Kovalev's power, and his size advantage, 99% proves he can hit Canelo harder than he has ever been hit. I think if Kovalev lands clean, Canelo goes down, I won't be surprised if he doesn't, but I'll be surprised if he's not hurt.

I don't think Canelo hits that hard, but he can set up and execute a great KO. Kovalev's chin isn't great, but not too weak, and body shots, stamina, lack of survival skills, are worse issues. I think Canelo can't use any amount of sheer power to discourage Kovalev with one headshot in the first 6 rounds. I think we will find out about Canelo's recovery, which has hardly been tested, because if he is hurt bad, it will be a big test of his recovery and survival skill.

Kovalev is likely to gas after 6-8 rounds, but it's whether Kovalev makes Canelo work harder than him, which would stop Canelo exploiting Kovalev's stamina issue. I think Kovalev will make Canelo work harder than he wants to, but Kovalev will tire first, Canelo will recover faster, and even when he's tired, he will be able to land perfectly timed, accurate body shots, I think that will be Kovalev's undoing.

I think early, Kovalev will land a lot more jabs, land more shots, Canelo will counter Kovalev, but will fail to hurt him at all, Canelo won't try to land body shots because he will be wary of Kovalev's power. Kovalev will patient, land the counter right hand, hurt Canelo in 1-2 of the early rounds, score a knockdown, will have all the momentum.

I think Canelo will do better in the mid rounds, Kovalev won't work 3 minutes, will be conservative, Canelo will start to land body shots, will still be defensively great, will land counter punches more often, and I think Kovalev will gas after 7 rounds.

I think in round 8, Kovalev will come apart, his tank will be empty, Canelo will hurt him bad to the body, will bring the attack to the head, will take Kovalev apart with accumulation, and stop him in 9 rounds.

So you are aware, the last time Kovalev's fight night weight was recorded was his first fight versus Eleider Alvarez (ESPN doesn't do fight night weights), he rehydrated to 185 lbs, which he has rehydrated to or below multiple times in his career. He's not and has never been a big rehydrator, I don't think he has ever been over 190

I didn't know that, I assumed a 175lb fighter who struggles to make weight as much as I've heard he does, would need a good 10lbs, but based on that information, he only needs 7-8lbs to rehydrate. Do you think 180 is the unfair weight limit for Kovalev that I thought 185 was? And is the weight he needs to rehydrate more like 183? Because in that case, Canelo would need a very low limit to stop Kovalev's rehydration. Thanks for the information, I'll change those numbers in my prediction break down.

Which were in 2015 and 2014 respectively, I wouldn't use that to gauge what he does now as much as I wouldn't use him being 181 versus Sillah

Except that's not true, because a little over a year ago versus Eleider Alvarez he weighed in at 185 lbs. Not to my knowledge, as I said I don't believe I have ever seen ESPN use fight night weights.

It depends on whether he tried to make himself harder to push back by being heavier, or if he needed the 13-14 lbs, apparently he was only 185 against Alvarez, but he did lose that fight, so it would be interesting to know what he rehydrated to in his last 2 fights, when he was better than the first Alvarez fight.

He's just not disciplined which is why he has had issues with weight in the past. I think 185 is fair, but I don't think there is a rehydration clause in general. If it was really low it would obviously favor Canelo but probably not to the degree people may think, if I had to guess Canelo will also be over 175 lbs in the ring.

Yeah but Kov lost that first Eleider fight and looked like shit. Maybe he was draining himself idk. He was good Vs Pascal and Hopkins. Those were some of his biggest fights. He was 188 and 189lbs there.

Against Alvarez? Disagree on that, he lost the first 3 rounds on most cards, I think it was more that his team didn't know what they were doing and he was not physically right in that fight, but Buddy McGirt knew how prepare Kovalev physically as well as tactically for the rematch.

I disagree. I thought Kovalev looked awful. The jabs from Eleider were snapping his head back like crazy. He looked not like his usual self. Looked way better in the rematch. Most people thought he was done after that first fight.

The judges did, they are the ringside, it's their opinions that matter, but most cards had it even, I was surprised Kovalev was ahead. Kovalev has always been a 6 round fighter in my opinion, maybe more like an 8 round fighter now, but there is obviously an aspect of what the pace of the fight is. I don't think you can put Kovalev's loss to Alvarez just down to it being another day at the office and then he got reckless and got caught, he was not as good in the first 6 rounds of that fight as he was in the rematch, I thought he would get destoryed in 4 rounds in the rematch, but the win was a testament to McGirt as a trainer.

Most cards here had him up, I had it even but it looked like Kovalev was actually picking up momentum. It wasn't just that, it was that his training and stylistic approach weren't as good as they should have been which McGirt improved. I also think Eleider Alvarez overperformed in the first fight and underperformed in the second fight, he's not been a notable puncher in the rest of his career.

Kovalev fights at around 190. Canelo fights at around 175. by Fight night Kovalev will be too sluggish because he won't be able to recover. Everything poits out there is a rehydration clause. The promotional team hasn't denied there is a rehydration clause, they just push forward the "there's no catchweight" hook. The closest there has been a comment about is that Sergey said he wouldn't recover more than 2 kils (4.4 lbs) next morning, which goes along with the rumour before the Yarde fight that there would be a 180 second weigh in limit (there was rumour of a catchweight at 172 along with this, but that one is out)

Let's call things for what they are: This fight is just entertainment and it's not going to be real boxing. I'd bet my house on Canelo since there is no way he is going to lose this scripted fight. I will probably watch old fights that night, since this is one is not worth watching.

If there isn't, then Canelo can't be accused of anything to make the fight unfair, and has to be given credit even from those who hate him, for fighting Kovalev. Well it would obviously favour him massively if it was 178 or less, but I've never heard of a rehydration clause so low. Canelo is an example of why I think ring weights, in general, are not a good metric for size and strength, and it's much more about what weight you are too big to make than how heavy you can be in the ring, because different fighters of the same size need different amoumts of weight to rehydrate to the same level. People say Canelo and Kovalev are the same size because they have weighed the same in the ring in the past, but that means little in my opinion, certainly compared to the fact that 168 would kill Kovalev and Canelo made 160 this year.

People who already had their minds made up were never going to give Canelo credit for winning the fight despite it being unthinkable for another MW champion to fight Kovalev. I think we would have heard about the rehydration clause by now if it existed, but maybe we'll find out, who knows. Canelo is an exception, he is stocky at 160 let alone 168 or 175. Very few guys can make his build work because it is the near opposite of the conventional wisdom of what works in boxing.

I don't know why everybody's dismissing Kovalev's chances. We still have yet to see how Canelo's going to handle an elite opponent who is much bigger than him. It will be interesting to see how he handles the power up at this weight.

Additionally he's always had a tough time dealing with a good jab.

That being said Canelo is much quicker, younger and has a far better chin.

Honestly I could see this going either way, neither outcome would shock me terribly.

Only having 6 weeks to prepare for him and not really getting to rest and recover from your last fight, which was physically a hard one where he almost got KOd, can be very damaging for an old fighter like Kovalev.

Kovalev knew there was a very good chance this fight would be next, he wasn't just sitting around and got the call. Pernell Whitaker had an eleven-week turn around from facing Hurtado to De La Hoya. In the fight versus Hurtado, Whitaker got put on the floor twice, was down on the cards, and had to knock Hurtado out to win, but he looked very good versus Oscar and many people thought he won that fight.

You know the details of Kovalev and Canelo's camps? Not at all what I am saying, they both have known the fight may be coming up for the same amount of time. A lot of guys do eight-week training camps, and some even do six-week camps. Kovalev just had a training camp and a fight so he won't need the extra time to get sharp as he would otherwise.

This is not personal in the slightest and I agree with you on the weight topic in this fight, but I agree with Floyd on this. Do you not think Groves physically needed more than the 3-4 months he had to recover after the Froch KO?, why do you think he looked so drained against Rebrasse and Douglin? And why do you think fighters get suspended after tough fights? The reason is, because there are more safety regulations now than there used to be, and just because fighters did something in the old days, doesn't mean it wasn't much more dangerous than how the sport is now, doesn't mean it won't be a factor, and the although fighting so often didn't seem to be an issue for fighters in the old days, that is only because they were all doing it, you are only in against your opponent, if both fighters come back too soon, we don't see the evidence in the fight, same when both fighters are old, both being small and inexperienced at a weight.

In my opinion, at world level, fighters should fight twice a year, simple as that.

What's the comparison between Groves and Kovalev? I already gave a near 1:1 comparison between Whitaker and Kovalev, and how Whitaker looked good on the short turn around. My point with saying that old fighters used to do it is that it is physically possible, now people act like boxers need 4-6 months between each fight. I've seen many trainers criticize the current structure of boxers fighting 2-3 times a year because they aren't as in shape and sharp as they would be if they were more active.

The comparison is that both fight too soon after a damaging loss, having not had the time they need, to rest, in an era when fighters take the time they need, to recover from tough fights. Yes, but being weight drained and still fighting is physically possible, what I'm saying is, Kovalev needs more than 3 weeks to recover properly, and 6 weeks is a short camp, so for those reasons, 2-3 months is not enough, his resistance, ability to stay strong in the fight will be compromised, and if it was the old days, Alvarez might also be coming off a tough fight, with 2-3 months between fights, so it wouldn't matter in a competitive sense. They do need that amount of time in some scenarios, Joshua needs 6 months between the Ruiz fights, Thurman should not fight against at least until January, because think how long it takes to recover, and have a good camp, mentally prepare as well.

Ok, well Kovalev took damage but he won, he didn't get sparked like Groves. Kovalev is not a big LHW, and despite having to make weight twice in a shorter period of time, he'll be in better condition for the Canelo fight because he's been so physically active. Joshua does not "need" six months between the Ruiz fights other than to lose muscle mass and improve his strategy. Sugar Ray Robinson got put through the ropes and was saved by the bell versus LaMotta in their second fight when he lost, rematched him three weeks later and won. Again, I've given a very close comparison between Whitaker and Kovalev but neither of you have answered to it.

I think that's like saying a weight drained fighter will be in better shape because they've worked hard, Kovalev would be in just as good shape if he'd fought, found a good balance for 3 months, started camp im decent shape, had a 12 week camp. Come on man, he was concussed, he needs a lot of time for the brain to heal. Yes, against a Lamotta who had also fought 3 weeks earlier, Robinson took more damage, but he wouldn't have won against a fully rested and trained Lamotta. That's a good point you make about Whitaker, he was behind in that fight, maybe he would have beaten De la Hoya clearly had he had more time, maybe it wasn't a factor in that case for whatever reason. It is possible that like just having a lot of miles and maybe or maybe not being shot, being drained because a fight is too after the last fight isn't an inevitable problem, but still a potential issue, because like I said before, Groves is an example, fighters get suspended after tough fights for a reason.

Kovalev is going to get destroyed by Canelo. I'm no Canelo fan (not a hater either) but there's no way in hell that Kovalev will be ready for him come Nov 2nd after the war he was in against Yarde less than a month ago. Now, if this fight were in like say May of next year then I'd give Kovalev a little bit of a chance or of at least hanging in there the full 12 with Canelo but with such short notice for a fight of this magnitude, no way. As of right now, I say Canelo stops Krusher inside of 9 rounds. Unless, that is that the extra 15 lbs will be too taxing for Canelo that they completely negate his punching power which COULD happen but I wouldn't bet on it.

This fight is totally worthless if there is a rehydration clause. The promotional team has been really quiet about this, and has made sure media don't ask that question during press conferences. They never give a direct answer.
With a rehydration clause, we might end up with a Kovalev performing like Chavez Jr when he faced Canelo. I really like Kovalev and I like watching him fight. If there wasn't a rehydration clause, the fight would be interesting.

Can't see Canelo visiting the canvas champ. He must have one of the best chins in boxing. I've always thought Kovalev's 'power' is more down to timing than sheer weight of the shots, if that makes sense. I think Kovalev will just be trying to keep Canelo at the end of his jab, touching him and keeping the distance rather than the usual ramrod jab all the time. The moment Canelo gets inside to land those sickening body shots it's over for Kovalev. That could take a while as Kovalev may need to tire for Canelo to take those risks.

I can see this ending between 6-8. When Kovalev hits canelo and it doesn't shift him, I see Kovalev losing heart and Canelo starting to close the distance round by round. Kovalev won't be able to take the body shots. Eventually Canelo will put the combinations together to stop the fight by TKO.

All that said, I am surprised to see Kovalev as such a big outsider for this fight with it being at light heavy.

Yes that makes sense, but I strongly disagree on that, because doing damage with timing more than power isn't something you see as early in the fight as early as we've seen Kovalev do damage, yes he has great timing, otherwise the right hand would never have got near Ward, but no, look at the weight behind Kovalev's punches when he fights, there is always a reaction from his opponent, he has made opponents feel the power early, he doesn't do damage with one isolated shot, like Lomachenko against Crolla and Martinez, which was more about timing than power, he gets his opponents respect very early, every power shot he lands is heavy.

Fair play if you are proven right, I agree about the outcome, but I think Canelo is going to have to walk through hell to get there, not saying he isn't prepared to do that, but he proved against Golovkin that he could do that. Do you believe Golovkin hits harder at 160 than Kovalev does at 175?, and I'm talking about sheer power, because I don't, there isn't a lot in it, but either way, it is much harder to take Kovalev's power than Golovkin's because he is a good 2 weights bigger than him, he isn't big for 175, Kovalev, but Golovkin is not big for 160.

To be fair I don't think any of those light heavy's you mentioned are big punchers but is Kovalev a devastating puncher that that possesses top level power? Yes. What I mean is, he may keep on the jab more and keep the power shots in his locker initially, trying to pace himself better. Obviously, Kovalev will always carry power but as he's got older, I wonder if he still has the confidence to go for the really big shots. Take Eleider and Yarde for example, the only time he had Eleider in trouble was in the 12th of the second fight due to an accumulation of shots. Same with Yarde, no 1 shot bothered him but he was out on his feet due to the same accumulation.

I think the first fight vs Eleider changed Kovalev, for the better in terms of his longevity. It taught him that he can't just go for knock outs early like he used to. He hasn't got the stamina when they don't just bowl over. And we know Canelo can take heavy shots for 12 rounds. For canelo it's just a case of choosing the right time I think. He will have to walk through some shots but if he times it right they probably won't have the same spite in them as the 1st round.

Regarding GGG/Kovalev, hard to say. I think GGG has more 1 punch KO power but I don't want to do Kovalev a disservice. Clearly both throw heavy shots. I don't think Kovalev will have Canelo in serious trouble at any point in the fight but the only way he does is through accumulation, rather than 1 punch.

Mayweather is always the example I go to with Canelo. For all Mayweathers brilliance, it was his power that was most underrated. He broke Canelo's heart because he wasn't prepared to walk through those spiteful shots that he couldn't see coming. The difference is that Kovalev won't be able to do that for 12 rounds.

Also what did you think of the cards? Kovalev sacrificed power for output, Canelo was very mindful of his power. Kovalev boxed well, threw a lot of punches, didn't let Canelo settle down, made it hard for Canelo to out box him because he used his boxing IQ, Canelo struggled to get the distance to hit the body, but I think he should have taken more risks, hurting Canelo was important for the win. Canelo was great in spots, his judgement of distance, timing, outstanding, but because of the respect he had for Kovalev's power, he didn't throw enough punches to be ahead, still, he got the job done, I saw a body shot KO or an accumulation stoppage coming, but not a power shot KO to the head, credit to him for that.

I believe we were both right, Canelo is never that wary of an opponent's power, but at the same time, the facts are, I said he goes down 1-2 times, you said he doesn't go down, you were right, but I stand by my logic of why I thought Kovalev would score a knockdown.

Nothing fishy, I had Kovalev slightly ahead, but I thought rounds 2 and 9 were very hard to score, either could have been ahead, and the cards that have Kovalev a long way up, are in all liklihood, biased against Canelo, same people who are saying Golovkin was robbed the second time.
