Fight Notes:

The fourth defense of James Toney's IBF Middleweight Championship is another filled with controversy as he struggles mightily with the game Dave Tiberi. Tiberi loses a point for a low blow in the sixth round and ultimately an unpopular split decision. After losing the fight, Tiberi retires from boxing despite an investigation being launched into the decision, which uncovers that the judges scoring the bout for Toney are not even licensed in the state of New Jersey.

Toney perseveres.

rorschach's picture

I see everybody here except Corey thought Toney lost too, I beg to differ.

rorschach's picture

Toney is absolutely right in his post fight interview, he was blocking most of Tiberi's shots with his arms and shoulders. If that was Mayweather they would say what a masterful defensive performance. It wasn't until years later that even boxing people would give Toney credit or his perfect shell//shoulder roll defense. That's why he had so many SD wins early during his first world title reign.

Left Eye's picture

Toney won by dint of poor low blow call. The referee deducted a point without previously warinng Tiberi and it didn't look like he hit Toney low at that time (though he got away with two big ones in the 12th).

Without that, it would have been a draw.

Toney didn't lose in any case in my view.

TheUndefeated's picture

Tiberi kicked Toney's weight-drained ass all over the ring. Not a close fight. Just look at Jackie Kallen's reaction when the decision was read. She knew. His whole team knew. The two judges who scored for Toney (one from Michigan and one from Chicago) were not even licensed in New Jersey. Felt bad for Tiberi, got cheated out of a world championship. No wonder he left the sport at 25. Tiberi has a hell of story for his grandkids.

Toney has always gotten a bad rap in this fight. Severely drained Toney still landed the harder shots vs. Tiberi's pitter patting in many rounds. Tiberi kept it close with his workrate, but always thought Alex Wallau got caught up in the hometown Tiberi crowd energy while commentating. Watch with no sound on and score this one.

TheUndefeated's picture

“I lost that fight with Tiberi, he should have gotten the decision in that fight..." - James Toney in 2009 in interview with Boxingscene.com.

Of course, that doesn't mean a fighter is necessarily right, but it certainly doesn't help support the notion he was the rightful victor.

We have the same scorecard Crafty except for rounds 2, 5 and 11 which you have for JT and I for DT.

Round 2, Alex and Dan were NOT backing Tiberi, they were still vocally critical of him at this point and saying he was using the wrong strategy. Toney took much of the round off while Tiberi forced the pace. When JT tried to steal the round at the end by spinning off the ropes, Tiberi immediately fired back and forced him back to the center of the ring. Look how many punches Toney misses at the end the round when he tried to steal it. Clear Tiberi round to me.

Round 5, another clear round for Tiberi as he dictates the pace and geography of the fight. You can tell Toney is uncomfortable with it and is trying to change it, but he is missing most his shots (many seem to be going over the head of Tiberi). I could watch this round 100 times and never score it for Toney.

Round 11, a closer round, but still not a Toney round IMO. As you say there are some hard shots Toney did get in there, but again, it appeared he trailed Tiberi in work-rate, landed punches and was forced off the back foot and ropes the whole round.

By the way, I thought Toney was clearly the winner in the preceding fight against McCallum - so I have no bias against him. Also, I firmly believe Toney is still pre-prime in his career at this point (still only 23). I don't think he came into his true prime until the Barkley fight and subsequently, I believe super middleweight, not middleweight was his greatest weight class.

I've read the Toney quote. Everything he says in an interview is grain of salt stuff.

Round 2--I hear ya, just disagree. Toney caught most of Tiberi's shots on the gloves early in the round, then landed a couple of a hard uppercuts, then a sequence with 1:10 left in the round with two hard, clean right hands that were cleaner than anything Tiberi landed that round. Close for sure.

Round 5--Another close one in my eyes. Could have gone for Tiberi with the higher workrate, I thought the harder right hands were enough to sway it for Toney, but could concede this one.

Round 11--Toney round. This really was Tiberi throwing the weaker shots, Toney landed the harder right hands in the middle of the round and rights that turned Tiberi's head at :51 and :30. Even though tired, lots of classic Toney subtle head movement in the this round, moving with Tiberi's shots and taking any sting out of them.

The McCallum fight is maybe favorite fight of all-time, but Toney didn't belong at middle or really even supermiddle, he'd come down to 160 and 168 from being a 200 lb. football player. The Barkley performance was dominant, but Barkley was tailor made for Toney. I think Toney's objectively best weight was 185-190. He was strong and comfortable at the low end of the Cruiserweight division, see the form he was in against Adolpho Washington, physically strong and clearly had more energy at that weight than many fights at 168 and 175.
