Prediction,

Two years ago I would definitely pick Alvarez to beat Smith, he beat Kovalev, Smith lost against Barrera, and doesn't get much credibility with the Hopkins win given Hopkins's age. Alvarez is 36, he must be past his best, Smith's last fight was the best I'd ever seen from him, I think Hart was poor, but Smith showed some improvement. Alvarez was poor in the Kovalev rematch, it was a one sided fight, he didn't take a bad, sustained beating, but he was a hurt a couple of times, took a lot of clean punches. I don't think either fighter is technically that good, but both have solid chins, both can punch. Alvarez has the better jab, I think he's the slightly better boxer, but Smith is the better inside fighter. I think the fight depends on whether Smith can make it an inside fight, and I think he can, he did a good job slipping Hart's jab, the fight being on the inside was more about Hart not moving enough than Smith making it his fight, but if he can slip Alvarez's jab, that takes a lot away from Alvarez, Alvarez's feet are slower than Hart's, so it might be easier for Smith to cut the distance at times, but his problem is the risk of walking into Alvarez's right hand.

I think this will be a close fight, Alvarez will win more of the early rounds by out working Smith on the outside, but Smith will be stronger down the stretch, and will get the better of the second half. I think Smith wins by SD.

Eleider Alvarez KO7

I think Alvarez is on the decline, but I think he has enough to beat Smith. Prediction, Alvarez by UD.

This is like Smith's 4th or 5th upset, and all of those he won convincingly, why do people underestimate him so much?

Gold's picture

because he's limited so it's easier to pick against him but he's made the best of his ability

Was only able to catch a 10 minute highlight video, but my take from that is that Smith mauled Alvarez almost the whole fight outside of a few odd counters. Scorecard on the site seems generous. KO was a huge right cross followed by a light jab, Alvarez was so out of sorts from the cross he backed up and fell through the ropes.

Ya, a 10 minute highlight is better to use for scoring than actually watching the whole fight LOL

I'm just going off what I have seen other people scoring the fight. I would watch the whole fight if I had access to ESPN+ myself. Not saying your card is bad, I'm just wondering if other scores would be more dominant if more people watched the fight. Bad Left Hook claimed he won every round, so did ESPN. No need to get so defensive.

Lots of scores out there giving him some rounds, Boxing Scene has the same as me for example. You can defo make the case for a few rounds, he landed the best single punch of the fight apart from the KO in the 7th for example, and had Joe buzzed. ESPN loved it too as they felt the need to replay it like 5 times during the break, I was wondering if they were stuck on a loop lol.

I imagine most cards will be around 7-1/6-2. Not sure what highlights you saw, but of course highlights only show what the editor decided to show and that's impacted by their own opinion of the fight.

Fair enough. Round 7 seemed to be the best round for him, but it did also finish with Smith pressuring with combos. I was also mainly reacting to the 6-3 score(with 10-10) in comparison to the 8-0 I was seeing elsewhere. 6-2 is only a point difference but makes sense, since there was one other round than 7 where Alvarez seemed to be landing his right hand a lot. They should have just aired this on regular espn, but I get they're trying to give subscribers something, since the level of content has been low for a while.

Champion97's picture

Great performance from Smith, he did great work on the inside, Alvarez couldn't get his shots off, he couldn't catch Smith as he was closing the gap, because Smith jabbed his way in, he couldn't land shots at long range, because Smith was mobile when he eased off, Alvarez's feet were too slow, and Alvarez's defence was poor. Alvarez tried to smother Smith's right hand as Smith came in, but it didn't work, because Smith was able to shorten the right hand. Smith was a very improved fighter in this fight, was very impressive, the only thing I wasn't impressed by was his pacing, he worked in spurts, and when he wasn't working, he wasn't keeping Alvarez under pressure, I don't think he'd have gassed if it had gone 12 rounds, and I don't think he lost a round, but it's one thing an opponent can try to exploit based on this fight.
