Fight Of The Century: Joe Frazier vs. Muhammad Ali I
Fight Notes: One of the greatest fights of all time, and Joe Frazier's signature victory. The scoring was done on a rounds basis, and has been adjusted by EOTR to reflect the modern ten-point must scoring system. |

Have two heavyweights ever been more superbly conditioned?
They set and maintained an unreal pace for 15 rounds, their speed and agility, they looked and fought like middleweights.
The level of skill on display is incredible.
Truly the Fight of the Century.

Where does the 33% controversy rating come from? I looked at the scorecards. My count might be wrong, but 16 had Frazier winning, 1 had Ali winning, and 3 had it a draw. That's 80% in favor in Frazier. Two had Frazier ahead but didn't score the whole fight. Were there some scores removed?

44% controversy rating. People really love Muhammad Ali. No wonder he got the benefit of the doubt in so many close fights.

Exactly. The bias was overwhelming at the time.

If you think the bias was overwhelming in favor of Ali at the time, you should do more research on that era in the US.

My dad was recently saying Ali was more popular in the UK than the US at one stage, and he is certainly a household in the UK today. I know Ali was very unpopular in the US because he refused go to to Vietnam.

If you are talking about popular as in having a more positive perception and being well-known as popularity that makes sense. There were legitimate criticisms of Ali, he was a complicated person, but many of the criticisms he faced in the US at the time were based in racism and jingoism. As we know, ultimately his courage outside of the ring has aged exceptionally well.

More or less dumb than scoring Kovalev vs. Ward I 118-109 Kovalev?

A 47% controversy rating for a fight in which 25 of the scorecards favor Joe Frazier, with only 2 scoring it for Ali, and 7 even cards, by my count. Even if you count the 2 incomplete cards (both have Frazier ahead) as disagreeing, then a that's 31% controversy rating. What am I missing?

Re: Fight Of The Century: Joe Frazier vs. Muhammad Ali I
So I looked at all the scorecards again, and 61 cards had Frazier winning, only 5 have Ali winning, and 6 are even. 2 of those scorecards with Frazier winning are incomplete, but that's still 59-5-6 for Frazier on cards that scored the full 15 rounds. How does that equal a 55% controversy rating? Are some scorecards for Frazier being counted the other way? There is definitely a big problem with the controversy rating
