Can you think of some fights that had a round:
1. You scored 10-8 with no knockdowns
2. A judge or commentator scored 10-8 (whether you agree or not?)
3. Very tough to decide if it should have been scored 10-9 or 10-8

10-8 rounds (no KD or deduction)
I scored Round 5 of John John Molina vs Tony The Tiger Lopez 10-8 for Molina with no KD
at the 6:45 mark is where the round starts

What would you score it?
I might call this a 10-9 but it's close, Lopez was in trouble briefly but was able to continuously fight back and keep it together
Appreciate the feedback.
One where I did not agree with the judge
1 judge scored Camacho vs Rosario (Both rounds 5 & 11) 10-8 rounds for Rosario where the other 2 judges did not. I think Rosario won them wide but not what I would call 10-8 wide.
How about you?
This is an interesting topic, at first I thought it was about whether you should score 10-10 or 9-9, which is a pointless topic, but this is an interesting topic, because it is about the scoring itself who wins what.
Joshua vs Klitschko round 5, 10-8, could have been 10-9, one judge gave it 10-9
Thurman vs Lopez round 7, 10-9, could have been 10-8, all the judges gave it 10-8
Wilder vs Ortiz round 7, 10-9 could have been 10-8, all the judges gave it 10-8
Broner vs Maidana round 9, could have been 10-8, don't know about the judges
I would sooner give Lopez a 10-8 against Thurman than Ortiz against Wilder, it was a bad beating, had him out on his feet, but it was 45 seconds, no more, Lopez had Thurman on the egde of a stoppage for most of the round.
For the record, I think we should consider that usually, a possible 10-8 round with no KD or PD, is a more damaging round than a round you are dropped in, if you think about the examples, and Khan against Maidana in round 10, against Diaz in round 11.
I scored a 10-8 when Josesito Lopez nearly stopped Keith Thurman earlier this year. Also one of the rounds Joe Joyce was battering Stiverne's brains in with little resistance I thought a 10-8 was appropriate.
They should be more prevalent in my opinion. If a fight would likely be stopped and the fighter is saved by the bell thats a 10-8
Thanks for the feedback! I am going to put these on my to watch/score list. If you think of any others let me know. As it stands it is tough to determine what warrants 10-9 or 10-8 in one sided rounds. I do agree with the poster above who said it should be more prevalent. It would be nice (but probably just as controversial lol) if we used the full scoring spectrum.
Round 10 of Khan Vs. Maidanna.
Obviously Pacquiao-De La Hoya round 7 if iirc. all three offical judges and lederman.
Also Mayweather vs. Gatti a few of them. not sure on off.judges, but I think Lederman did.
I'm probably forgetting some but these were all 10-8 rounds imo.
Adrien Broner - Antonio DeMarco, 5th round
Floyd Mayweather - Arturo Gatti, 6th round
Amir Khan - Marcos Maidana, 10th round
John Duddy - Luis Ramon Campas, 9th round
Timothy Bradley - Ruslan Provodnikov, 2nd round
The 9th round of Broner-Maidana, the 8th round of Thurman-Lopez, along with several rounds of Matthysse-Provodnikov & Pacquiao-De La Hoya easily could've been scored 10-8 imo.
I’m all for more liberal use of the 10 point ‘must’ system. Consider that, in a close, competitive round, we score 10-9 for the guy that we feel edged it out (10-10 if it really is too close to call, though that tends to be frowned upon). So, at the other end of the competitive spectrum, in a round where fighter A comprehensively outboxes his opponent, thoroughly dominates and outclasses fighter B, is it still justifiable to score THAT round by the same 10-9 margin? Does a 1 point advantage really reflect what transpired in those 3 minutes, relative to other individual rounds? I would suggest that, even in the absence of a knockdown, or fighter B getting rocked to his boots, there is ample justification in such a round to go 10-8.
A recent example would be the final round of Usyk-Gasiev. The whole fight was a masterclass from Usyk, arguably a shutout. However, Usyk really went to town on Gasiev in the 12th, landing sooo many punches, I personally scored it 10-8. His utter dominance in those 3 minutes warranted a distinction from the previous 11 rounds in my opinion.
Historically, I would have scored a number of 10-8 ‘boxing dominance’ rounds for Pernell Whitaker. When he was in his prime and really smoking.
Round 12 of Juan Manuel Lopez vs Rogers Mtagwa. I scored it a 10-8 round for Rogers Mtagwa. Lopez was clearly out on his feet, he kept wobbling and stumbling around the ring and using the ropes a lot for leverage. There was a questionable slip on that round too which I believe had the fight not been in Lopez's home town might've been ruled a KD.
Without going through old scorecards and my notes I can't think of examples off the top of my head. I do give 10 8's with no KD's/deductions but rarely. For that to happen on my scorecard it's when a fighter is beat up for 3 minutes and does everything but go down, wobbling around, getting hurt several times but just does enough to stop the referee from ending the fight.
I've got a feeling I scored a 10 8 round for Calzaghe vs Lacy thinking about it (in the round where the ref REALLY should have stopped it).
Fairly recent ones I scored:
Omar Chavez vs Jose Carlos Paz. Round 7
Francisco Rodriguez Jr vs Martin Tecuapetla. Round 10. (Had Rodriguez 1 round down going into the tenth)
Wilder vs Ortiz 1 Round 7: Ortiz had Wilder in just as much trouble as Wilder had him in trouble when Ortiz was down in round 5.
Pac vs Horn round 9: Horn was on the verge of being stopped in between rounds.
Fury vs Wallin rounds 10 and 11: Total thrashing, corner nearly stopped the fight. It may seem controversial to score them 10-8 but I'm a believer in scoring dominant rounds 10-8, as it better reflects who controlled the action.
Nit having a tv for some time now i have not watched any fights in years. But late 80s, all through the 90s i was glued to usa Tuesday night fights eith sran O'Grady and HBO of course. Never cared much for showtimes fights but to answer the question its really hard to find a round where you score a 10-8 with out a knickdown or point reduction. I cant ever recall a round being so loo sided thst it warranted a 10-8.
Maybe someone can refresh my memory but if i recall willie pep won a round once and he never swung a punch in that round.
Anyonr else recall that fight?
I don't think there is footage of that Willie Pep fight so anybody that claimed to recall the actual footage would be misremembering but must be the most legendary round in boxing.

That's well known, to my knowledge, Pep is the only fighter in history to win a round without throwing a shot.
Indeed his footwork was truiy amazing
Great topic. Judges are too conservative. In the women's game, where there are very few KDs, this should be used more liberally. For example I had Taylor-Serrano even in Rounds 5-5 but gave Serrano a 10-8 round in the 5th for the battering she gave Taylor, so I had her winning the fight 95-94. When Sugar Ray and Tommy Hearns fought to a draw in their second fight, Tommy knocked him down twice but judges gave Sugar Ray a few 10-8 rounds without a KD and that is what got the draw, and those were unwarranted. Tommy deserved to get that win.
One could not justify NOT scoring round 3 of Sung Kil-Moon vs Nana Yaw Konadu 2 a 10-8 round for SKM lol
I recently watched the fight between Alex Saucedo and Leonardo Zappavigna and many observers (including some in here) scored round 4 10-8 for Zappavigna without a KD or deduction. Very huge domination by Zappavigna, it is the only round he wins but in that round he almost forced the referee to stop Saucedo. The whole fight is highly recommended for boxing fans.
My view on the subject : if a boxer is strong enough to resist a violent sequence from his opponent and not put a knee down, I don't see a reason to apply a 8-10 against him, it would be as if his bravery is not appreciated. But of course it is not far between bravery and foolishness and sometimes it would be better to kneel down than risking being stopped by referee or suffering physical damages.
