Re: Joe Louis vs Buddy Baer Scorecard by Addi_Bomaye
R1- Baer is pressuring right away and because of it, most of the round consists of cagey infighting. Both are having a similar amount of success with body blows and uppercuts, but Louis is able to rock Baer early with a right and score from the outside with his jab at times. Late, Baer knocks Louis out of the ropes and onto the ring apron with a left hook. Louis recovers fast, but this was a great start for the challenger. However, this would by far be the closest he’d come to avenging his brother, as he’d virtually do nothing to Louis ever again.

R2- After some rough infighting, Louis starts to slip and counter Baer precisely. Showing speed and ferocity, he is able to light Baer up with his hooks from both hands to the head and body, land the overhand right every time he sets it up, and always comes back to land 2-3 shots after slipping punches. Baer resorts to squaring up and coming in with his head down, only making himself an easier target. Great comeback round for Louis.

R3-R5- Not on film, but I am going to assume Louis won them based on what I have read.

R6- Louis has had no trouble pushing back the easily bigger man since the second round. As he continues to light Baer up with hooks, uppercuts and crosses, Baer shows signs that he is breaking down throughout the round. The main signs are when he tries to hide his chin between his shoulders after a barrage, and due to seeing him throw arm punches after a while. After a rapid, nonstop assault in the round, Louis lands a left hook to the body then follows with a brutal right cross that spins Baer around and lays him on the canvas. Louis then viciously snaps back the head of the groggy challenger four times in a row with a pair of right uppercuts and crosses respectively. Soon after, a right uppercut dazes and wobbles Baer. Before Baer can just naturally sink to the canvas, another mean right on the button sends him down hard. Baer gets up wobbly. Just a tiny moment before the bell, Louis lets go of another cross that lands at the bell, spinning and flattening Baer on his back. I cannot help but chuckle at the fact that Baer’s team appears right after he falls, but this would be his downfall due to their absolute refusal to leave the ring due to protest. In his case, a DQ loss does look better on his record than a knockout, but Louis did deserve a knockout win due to how clearly out of it Baer was, and due to the fact the shot landed at a good, just ironic time. Underrated performance though by Louis, who looked as ferocious and powerful as ever against easily his biggest opponent yet. Next time these two would meet, Louis would prove that Buddy Baer was no where near a match for him.
