R1- The two are feeling eachother out in the center of the ring. Napoles wins the battle of the jabs and tags Lewis repeatedly with left hooks in the closing portion.

R2- Napoles reassumes the role of the aggressor and still shows the better defense between the two while doing so. Lewis tries to get bold and exchange with Napoles at times, only to get clipped by left hooks in every instance. One of Napoles’ left hooks clearly buzzes Lewis and causes him to hold, but he recovers fast.

R3- Now the jab of Lewis is flowing and Napoles is having a hard time avoiding it. Early, Lewis backs Napoles up with a triple jab and right hand before blasting him with a left hook, Napoles takes it just fine.

R4- Lewis gets in a double jab early, only for Napoles to respond with a pair of body shots and a left hook. Napoles gets in several short combinations to the body and manages to catch Lewis coming in at times with uppercuts and right hands.

R5- When Napoles opens up, Lewis seems very imposed, as he profusely backpedals or holds. Nonetheless, Napoles is still able to get several clean blows in. Near the end, Napoles throws some awkward left uppercuts that land on the button.

R6- Early on, Napoles nails Lewis with a right uppercut during an exchange that causes Lewis to miss a left hook and hold after. The opposite was on display early, but now it is Lewis who is walking into jabs over and over.

R7- The commentary remarks how Napoles is now coasting, but this does not at all mean he lost the round. Both are having good success with the jab, but Napoles is beating Lewis to the punch with it more often than not and he mixes in several clean left hooks that get the attention of the challenger.

R8- The increased output of the jab allows Lewis to get the better of this punch, whether as a scoring blow or a setup. A check hook lands early for Lewis and he responds to a right by Napoles with a better one. Lewis is finally having success to the body and with the uppercut here in round eight. Good bounceback round for the challenger.

R9- The two exchange heavily in this round, with both having good moments throught. Most of Napoles’ success has been through counters, while Lewis gets in some 1-2’s from the outside. The left hook of Napoles has been the most potent punch of the fight and it continues to be the case here, as he makes Lewis hold after being hit by it several times. A trio of left hooks in the middle of the round seem to shake Lewis up a bit, but he shows an impressive recovery.

R10- Even though clinching is a good way to neutralize an opponent’s offense, Lewis’ persistence to do so after nearly every time he is hit by a left hook in this fight just comes off as extremely negative as far as body language goes. Lewis appears to be slowing down, allowing Napoles to pick off several left hooks and right hands on him from the outside. Napoles wins the battle of the jabs too and manages to take Lewis’ jab away with counters when he starts to use it.

R11- Napoles is easily winning the battle of the jabs with volume and defense, and wings in numerous rights over the top. When Lewis holds, Napoles takes advantage with body blows.

R12- Though fading a bit, Napoles is still able to cut the distance easily and land left hooks and uppercuts often. Lewis is potshotting to success, but Napoles is outpunching and outgunning him in the exchanges.

R13- The face of Napoles looks worse for wear and he clearly has less in the tank. That said, he is busier or just as busy as Lewis, but Lewis is slipping past or rolling with them well. Napoles continuously walks into jabs, but Lewis is also catching him with rights, left hooks and uppercuts. These leads by Lewis certainly are not as hard as the ones by Napoles, but they are scoring.

R14- Lewis has put more bounce in his step, as he makes Napoles miss a lot when swinging for the fences, while walking him into a stiff jab in return. Late, Lewis starts to get cocky without paying for it. He casually runs around Napoles after dodging a shot then stumbles him with a right uppercut to the chin. Best round of the fight for the challenger.

R15- Despite being comfortably ahead on points (on my card at least), Napoles gets desperate and wild with his offense. Lewis is undettered, as he gets over a wide amount of left hooks from the shorter, yet stronger fighter and counters his pressure and misses with check hooks and lead rights. Even after sweeping the final three rounds, I do not understand how one could give Lewis seven total rounds and I especially do not understand how Lewis could say he won the fight. While Lewis gave an impressive effort, showed grit as well as good fundamentals and ring IQ, Napoles proved to be a pedigree above. Not only did Napoles outbox the boxer, he won nearly every single exchange off power alone, hurting Lewis many times and causing him to react negatively after landing a clean shot countless times. Essentially, Napoles outpunched, outslicked, outgunned, and overall outclassed the skilled veteran in a highly entertaining, fast-paced chess match. As competitive as this was, Napoles would make the necessary adjustments as expected in the rematch and let it be anything but competitive.
