Vassiliy Jirov vs. James Toney
Fight Notes: An amazing fight that has proven to be James Toney's last great performance. The valiant Vassiliy Jirov, a powerful champion prior, was never quite the same after the savage beatdown he endured. |

Re: Vassiliy Jirov vs. James Toney
I could have swore I watched this fight live on Fox Sports Net, what a amazing scrap! Jirov gave everything he had, and Toney turned back the clock one night and gave one last great performance. I remember the announcers thought Toney was behind going into the 12th and said he needed at least a knockdown to have a shot, and Toney came through.

Supreme skill from Toney.
As far as pure boxing ability, Toney is probably the most naturally gifted of all time.

Re: Vassiliy Jirov vs. James Toney
rd 2,4,6,8,9,11 real competitive
rd 8 Jirov steals the rd right at the death for me with a couple of big shots even with James Toney winning most of the little exchanges on the ropes and even when Jirov had his best moments landing in bunches & chasing Toney to centre ring maybe 15 secs after Jim Lampley goes on his rant about Toney's promoter Goosen Toney comes back with his little rights to maybe edge the rd back until the bell when Jirov.....
rd 9 Toney lands the better quality shots of the ropes than the damage Jirov does to him
pretty much all the decisive rds in the fight belonged to Toney i felt

Re: Vassiliy Jirov vs. James Toney
I'm a huge James Toney fan, but ridiculous how wide many of these cards are. You have to give Jirov credit for volume body work in the first half of the fight; I thought he won 2,4,5 clearly and with no overzealous deduction by Smoger and had stayed on his feet in the 12th deserved a draw.
I would also add that Jirov is an underrated boxer and was giving James trouble early with his herky-jerky Tyson Fury-esque upper body movement, was just enough to throw James off. When Jirov stopped doing this in the second half, James was able to strafe him with his patented counter right and, more importantly, short, crisp left hooks. If Jirov could have had the discipline to keep moving and mix a few more jabs (also underrated) he might have won this.

Re: Vassiliy Jirov vs. James Toney
On first view, it seems that Jirov did better than the scorecards say because he threw a lot of punches. That's deceptive, however, as they were primarily arm punches, especially as the fight went on. Toney's punches were far more accurate, and cleaner, and he staggered Jirov on numerous occasions in the second half of the fight. I've watched the entire fight at 1/4 speed, several times, and I had two takeaways: 1, how much of Jirov's attack hits Toney's gloves or shoulders; and 2, what a terrible beating Jirov took. It's a tribute to Jirov's will and conditioning that he wasn't KO'd.

Toney's Last Great Performance?
Toney himself would justifiably point to his next fight - the obliteration of Evander Holyfield - as one of his greatest performances. Yes Holyfield was on the downslide but to that point he had only been stopped by a prime Riddick Bowe. Toney absolutely dominated Holyfield. The beating he put on a rugged, 241 lb. Ruiz also deserves an honorable mention.

Re: Toney's Last Great Performance?
Toney is the type of fighter that had two careers. This is one of my all time favorite fighters. But for the latter stage of his career, I'd say him beating Jirov. Many people don't realize or seem to have forgotten that at this point Jirov not only was a betting favorite going onto this fight but he was considered THE man at Cruiserweight. Had Jirov won this fight he most likely would've challenged John Ruiz for the WBA or Chris Byrd for the IBF heavyweight titles or if not he would've landed a big payday fight against Roy Jones. That said, Jirov was known for being a heavy puncher and I was amazed at how Toney took the sting out of Jirov's punches so early on like it seemed Jirov was slapping his punches around and then methodically broke him down towards that KD at the end which you can see it was out of sheer exhaustion. Overall, classic Toney performance. Also, gotta love JT's trash talk game it was one of my favorites as well.

I agree. I just meant that Toney thinks his best fights are Holyfield and Barkley. I have him telling me on tape!

Re: Vassiliy Jirov vs. James Toney
The draw scored by Lederman was on of his worst scorecards ever. Competitive match, but Toney was clearly far more accurate and the crystal clear winner.
