WOW....just WOW. This is the first shockingly good performance for me in a while. I know Fury was saying he was going for the KO, but considering his previous comments before the first fight, I really didn't take that seriously. I was leaning towards Fury by decision in what I expected to be a 50/50 type fight. No hindsight bias at all just because I leaned Fury, I am absolutely shocked the way Fury came in and bulldozed Wilder. Never, ever would I have predicted him to make such an extreme adjustment. Stand his ground more-yes because of the weight-but not like that.
Fury did what he said and said what he did. This will be remembered as a classic performance, and I think Sugar Hill Steward has to have an early leg up for trainer of the year. This has to be one of the most stark adaptations I've ever seen in a rematch. I liked both guys coming in, although I'm a slightly bigger fan of Fury. Even Wilder fans have to have some slight appreciation for the masterclass that was put on once the emotions die down.
As for Wilder, he was a warrior, but the corner made the right decision. He was taking a beating. His jaw was swollen, his eardrum seemed like it had burst open, and his equilibrium was off from the punch in the 3rd round on. It was a brave move from his corner, and it may have prevented career ending damage. It's a bit of a shame to lose the American claim to the HW belt, but I don't necessarily think it is totally over for Wilder.
I'm not sure he should jump right in to a rematch with Fury. That might be foolish, considering Fury just wrote the blue print. If I'm Wilder I take some time to rest and an easier fight to recuperate. I still think the interest is there for Joshua-Wilder, and while Joshua has to be the favorite, Wilder probably has a better chance of landing something fight changing against him.
Regardless of what comes night, this was another classic night of HW boxing, and I can only appreciate the willingness of these two warriors to get in the ring with the best opposition.
