Re: Undisputed: Evander Holyfield vs. Lennox Lewis I...
Round 1 - If this was wrestling, this round would be a definite win for Holyfield. But it’s not. In fairness, Evander did land a very solid left hand to end the round but I still think Lewis was busier for most of the round and landed some decent shots of his own. Definitely a feeling out process for both guys but still think it was a close but decisive win for Lewis.
Round 2 - Very clear win for Lewis. He just outboxed Holyfield all round and unleashed a very good combination to start the round off.
Round 3 - This was a very close and competitive round that you could definitely give to either guy. I gave this one to Holyfield as I felt he landed more clean shots on the chin than Lewis did.
Round 4 - Like the first, this round was a close one but I still think it was a comfortable win for Lewis. He was just busier for most of the round. Holyfield did unleash a combination around ⅔ of the way through the round but it was hard to see what really landed due to the horrendous camera angle.
Round 5 - Dominant round for Lewis. He had Holyfield stuck on the ropes for like a minute straight and landed some amazing uppercuts. It actually looked like he was sort of close to a stoppage at one point. Holyfield did try and make a comeback the second half of the round but it was nowhere near enough to win. Apparently one of the judges gave this round to Holyfield which is blatant incompetence/corruption.
Round 6 - This one was somewhat competitive for the first 2 minutes, as Lennox was busier whilst Evander landed a very solid left hand at the start of the round. However, Lennox then landed a huge uppercut and that’s when it was pretty much decided who won the round. Holyfield didn’t really respond with anything whilst Lewis continued to land some good shots taking the round comfortably.
Round 7 - Similarly to the last round, this one was close for the first half but then Lennox unleashed a combination that seemed to hurt Holyfield pretty badly, basically completely stealing it. I think this round shows just how sluggish Holyfield was during this fight. There was a point towards the start of it he had his guard up and Lennox was able to poke through it. He did this about 10 times and Holyfield just stood there not doing anything.
Round 8 - I think this was a close one. Holyfield was more active than he’d been in most of the rounds up until this point. However, I still think Lewis constantly landed the better shots, pretty much outdoing all of Holyfield’s work. This was fairly close but I still think it was a decisive win for Lewis.
Round 9 - Neither guys did much this round but I still think it was a certain Lewis win. Constantly outboxed and landed the better punches, outdoing all of Holyfield’s work.
Round 10 - You can tell Holyfield knew he needed a knockout to win at this point. I felt this was the only round of the fight so far that was a definite Holyfield win. He landed some of his best punches of the fight in this round and was actually more active than Lennox for a lot of it. Lewis did land some solid shots of his own but I don’t think it was enough to steal the round.
Round 11 - Contrary to a lot of the other scores, I think Holyfield just about edged this one. It was incredibly close and you could give it to Lewis as well but Evander did land some very solid shots to Lewis’s jaw this round which ,despite Lennox’s strong efforts to win the round back, I think were just enough to barely win. I could maybe score this one 10-10 but I’m not really a huge fan of scoring tie rounds.
Round 12 - A strong finish from both guys. It was competitive early but Lewis landed a lot of great shots towards the end of the round which made it a definite win for him.
This was a pretty terrible performance by Holyfield. You can tell that he was so focused on trying to KO Lennox in the 3rd round that ,when he didn’t, he had no plan B. He looked incredibly sluggish all night and ,whilst he definitely had his moments, he didn’t do nearly enough to win. I get he was incredibly old at this point but he was also old when he fought Tyson and that was one of his best performances imo.
Lennox rarely had a bad performance in his career and I think this one was one of his greatest. Whilst he did get a bit cocky at times and paid the price for it, he was able to outbox Holyfield all night and actually looked close to a stoppage at certain points. He also took Holyfield’s shots really well as well.
Oh my god this decision was bad. Like. Really bad.
I genuinely think you could make a better case for Lewis winning every round than Holyfield winning 6. The only ones I gave to Holyfield were 3, 10 and 11. Even then rounds 3 and 11 you could also give to Lewis. There’s a chance this was just incompetence but seeing that Don King was involved i think it’s fairly unlikely. I reckon this might’ve been an effort to try and make a rematch happen to essentially give everyone more money. Good for business but not good for Lennox who was robbed of all his hard work.
