Titles at Stake:
WBC Light Heavyweight Champion Roy Jones Jr. suffers the first loss of his career in controversial style when he takes on undefeated Montell Griffin. Jones makes up an early points deficit by putting Griffin on the canvas in the seventh round. After eight close, competitive rounds in which the judges are split on who is ahead, Jones finally hurts the challenger in the ninth. Griffin goes down on a knee, but Jones proceeds to hit him with another combination. After starting to complain to Referee Tony Perez, Griffin suddenly collapses head first on the canvas and is counted out. Jones thinks he has a knockout win, but, after some deliberation, is instead disqualified for the foul.
