Fight Notes: 

Javier Fortuna (130-135lb fighter) and Adrian Granados (140-147lb fighter) meet at 140, and have a 10 round scheduled fight, in Texas, on the undercard of Texan, Errol Spence Jr's second defence his his IBF 147lb title, against unbeaten challenger, Carlos Ocampo.

Fortuna seems to be winning the fight in the first couple of rounds, throwing more, landing with more decent shots as well. Round 3 seems like a much better round for Granados, who's massive size advantage starts to tell.

An illegally fighting Fortuna loses 2 points in a 4th round which he is losing, and the fight seems to be going against him. Towards the end of round 4, the fight finishes, bizarrely, as Fortuna falls out the ring and claims Granados pushed him. Fortuna is taken out in a neckbrace, and with it not being 100% clear exactly what happened, but it being clear that Fortuna was not knocked out by punches, the fight is declared a No Contest.

Prediction,

Great match.
This should be a very entertaining fight, and a fascinating fight as well.

Granados and Fortuna are both good fighters, both still young, and although both coming off losses, they lost to a former world champion, and a current world champion, and both of them did their reputations no harm, did great in defeat.
Both Granados and Fortuna have more than one loss, but both have at least one good win.

Granados has more losses than Fortuna, but Granados has never been stopped, Fortuna was seemingly on his way to defending his WBA 130lb title against Jason Sosa, but Sosa rallied and stopped him, late.

The most interesting aspect of this fight, I think, is the size difference, Granados is 5'9, Fortuna is 5'6, he is the bigger guy, but especially, because Granados has fought at 147, in his last two fights, against Adrien Broner, and Shawn Porter, before that, he fought Amir Imam at 140, but before that, following losing to Felix Diaz, at 140, he had 4 straight fights at 147, so the majority of Granados's last 10 fights have been at welterweight. Fortuna was a world champion at 130, he fought between 135 and 126, in his early fights, he fought for interim world title fights at 126 in 2012 and 13, he fought in March 2013, at 126, and then had 6 fights in a row, but after losing to Sosa, he had a few fights at 132, 133, until his last fight, for the lightweight IBF title, he missed the weight, but did brilliantly in that fight.

Granados is an adapted 147 lb fighter, Fortuna is an adpated 130-135lb fighter, there is a lot of size difference, but it is interesting that they can fight, meet halfway, bulk up/cut down to 140. As long as Granados can make the weight, and rehydrate, then without doubt, he has the weight advantage, the size advantage, he has experience at 140, 147, Fortuna has been at 126, 130, 135, but never 140, he is fighting a guy who will be substantially physically stronger than him, who will outweigh him by a lot, and will be naturally bigger than him, for Fortuna to win this fight, seems like a big ask.

You could argue that Fortuna is the better fighter because he has lost twice and Granados has lost six times. Granados might be the best 6 times defeated boxer in the world, Shawn Porter was the first to beat him by anything other than an MD or SD, Diaz, Gomez, Solomon, all unbeaten at the time they beat Granados.

I think Fortuna is every bit as good as Felix Diaz, better than Brad Solomon I think, he is skilled, awkward, he boxed much better than I expected against Easter, it looks like he might be a slight favourite.

Fortuna moves well, he is a good combination puncher, he has good variety, but when an opponent has him in the range they want him, he can be vulnerable, he has been hurt, knocked down outside of his losses, I can see why people think Fortuna will be too good, beat Granados, but I think Granados, skilled, one heck of a fighter as he keeps proving, teak tough, and I think he has a real size advantage, he is much more durable, and I think he wins this.

I think Fortuna will be quick in the early rounds, beat Granados to the punch, but he will carry less power at 140, he might not have as much speed, and when he hits Granados, he will find himself unable to really do any damage because of the size of his opponent, he will be made to work hard for any success he has in the first 3 or 4 rounds, and he isn't used to carrying the extra weight at 140, he might also struggle with taking punches from a much bigger fighter, and I think by the end of round 6, Granados will be taking over as the size difference becomes more difficult for Fortuna, and Granados starts to inflict some punishment. I think maybe in round 9, definitely I think at some late stage, Granados will put a sustained beating on a bullied, exhausted Fortuna, and I think he will stop him.

R1) Granados starts pressing with body shots, Fortuna counters back with strong shots. Grandados presses and they clinch, getting countered a lot. Granados trying to bully, but Fortuna catching and shooting, landing cleaner, stronger shots. R1 for Fortuna.

R2) Slower start, with more measured work from both. Granados presses and they clinch; not able to impose his size yet. Big exchange along ropes with both landing, followed by another similar exchange a few moments later. Good infighting from both. Granados attempting to work behind jab more, to set up big shots, but gets countered with a few strong shots. Late exchange with both landing, Granados with a few harder ones. Close R2 to Fortuna.

R3) Granados trying to bully early, lots of clinching trying to get inside, but catching some counter shots. Granados finally works his way in, landing some nice work to body and head, Fortuna then smothers with clinch. Granados keeps pressing, but getting slapped with scoring shots, that aren't hurting. Granados works inside again, getting in some good work, but Fortuna fires back and scores a few hard shots. More pressing, clinching, and infighting, with Fortuna landing a nice counter. After Granados presses more, gets hit with lunging straight from Fortuna. Big exchange to end rounfd, with both landing nice shots. Due to aggression, and landing bigger shots, I gave it to Granados.

R4)Starts with press and clinch for first 30 seconds or so, with Granados landing some body shots, getting countered along the way with nice scoring shots, one of which clips the back of Granados' head, losing Fortuna 1 point. Lots of pressing, clinching, with Granados as the aggressor. Fortuna seems to be tiring, or getting frustrated, clinching more. More clinching as Granados works inside. After a number of warnings, Fortuna deducted another point. Fortuna comes out pressing, landing a number or big shots, pushing Granados back for first time. Lands another shot on Granados. Granados bullies him to the ropes, and Fortuna slips through the ropes. Sells it like he hit his head, or had a neck injury, but seemed questionable. Taken out in neck brace, but was moving. Rules NC.

I haven't even seen the fight, and I'm 95% sure Fortuna, like Andre Dirrell, like Moises Flores, is an actor, he pretended to have been pushed out of the ring and had a neck injury inflicted on him in the process, tried to get the other guy disqualified, knew he wasn't going to win, wanted a way out, and he might as well have taken the money out of the fans' pockets, it is terrible in sport when fighters do that. If I was Adrian Granados, I would be raging at Fortuna for pulling that stunt!
