Prediction.

Edwards fought in 2020, Mthalane didn't, and Edwards is a career super flyweight, he's very big at 112, the weight heavily favours him as long as he isn't drained. I think a prime Mthalane would have beaten Edwards, he definitely has the better resume, and considering his age, his form was very good in 2019, but the timing heavily favours Edwards, Mthalane is very old at 38, I think Edwards is good enough to beat him on account of his age.

There is a big difference in speed, that's a problem for Mthalane, Edwards doesn't have a good chin, but neither does Mthalane, Mthalane hits harder than Edwards, but I definitely think Edwards hits harder than his KO ratio suggests even at 115, and at 112, he's definitely not a non-puncher. Mthalane is offensively better than Edwards, he definitely has the better variety, he has a solid guard that's hard to split, but Edwards has better defensive movement, and I think he's defensively better overall. Mthalane is mentally balanced in the pocket, his experience could be important if he can make Edwards stand in front of him, but Edward's feet might be too fast. Mthalane likely has better survival skill, with his experience, but Edwards will be able to use the ring to kill time and avoid a follow up because of his age and agility. I think Mthalane can push a high tempo, won't gas from the pace, but because of his age, after a tough round, the minute is unlikely to be enough, and that could be very important in the second half.

I think Mthalane will struggle to cut off the ring in the early rounds because of Edward's footwork, but Edwards will be cautious, will be out of his own range, Mthalane will use his jab to make him react, and Edwards will be wary of the over hand right. I think Edwards will throw more combinations in the mid rounds, will stick and move, his shots will be mostly blocked, but Mthalane will take more out of himself, he'll have to force his pressure because of the difference in foot speed, and his shots will fall short. I think Mthalane will tire in the late rounds, will relent, and that's when Edwards will go on the offensive, will put enough shots to to split the guard, will hurt Mthalane, and build on it.

I think Edwards wins by late stoppage, I wouldn't be shocked if Mthalane won, he beat Tete and Casimero, is a veteran, is declining slowly, can definitely hurt Edwards, but I think Edwards can hurt him more easily, and his age is too much of a factor.

Two awful score cards 118-111, 120-108(!) Edwards

Champion97's picture

Solid performance from Edwards, I was impressed by his accuracy, especially to the body. I didn't agree with the advice from Edwards's trainer, because landing single shots early in the round, and using the ring for the rest of the round wasn't giving him any momentum, his movement was great, and was very important for him, but he was exerting too much movement, wasn't always making Mthalane follow him, so his legs were working harder, Mthalane wasn't missing as much or walking into as many shots because Edwards was moving faster than he needed to, and his movement compromised his ability to break Mthalane down. I don't think Edwards could have stopped Mthalane, but I think he coasted in the late rounds, there wasn't much on Mthalane's shots at that stage, the amount clean shots from Edwards had knocked it out of him, but he was still throwing more than in the first half, he showed phenomenal heart and conditioning, did very well to take Edwards's hard, accurate body shots.
