Fight Notes:

WBO bantamweight world champion, South Africa's Zolani Tete, defends his title against top level Russian amateur, Mikhail Aloyan, in Russia, in the quarterfinals of the World Boxing Super Series tournament.

Tete comes off an 11 second, 1 punch knockout, followed by an underwhelming, but very one sided win over veteran, Omar Narvaez. Aloyan, inexperienced as a professional, an underdog, but a great amateur, and having been 10 rounds twice, and 12 rounds, once.

Tete gets off to a great start, drops Aloyan, it is not a heavy knockdown, but Tete starts well, as he uses his jab, picks Aloyan off. Aloyan comes on in the mid rounds, lands some clean shots, and makes it hard for Tete to get his shots off. The fight is ugly in the second half, as the fighters clinch. Both fighters lose a point in the late rounds, Tete, for use of the elbow, Aloyan, for excessive clinching. The last 8 or 9 rounds of the fight are close.

Tete wins by unanimous decision, by a not wide but decisive margin, but doesn't really impress. Tete defends his title, and advances to the WBSS semi-finals.

After the fight, likely to be unhappy with his performance, Tete confirms he will train be trained by Floyd Mayweather Sr.

Prediction,

Good fight.

Tete should be the favourite, he is a veteran, he is a two weight world champion, he is not an old fighter, and his form over the last few years, has been brilliant, he has been absolutely dominant, in his last fight, schooled, shutout Omar Narvaez, it was too easy for him, also against Arthur Villanueva.

Aloyan has potential, he was a great amateur, beat Kal Yafai, Amnat Ruenroeng, Andrew Selby, Rau'shee Warren in the unpaid ranks, two time Olympic medalist, never the gold, but still won medals in the Olympics in 2012 and in 2016. Aloyan turned professional at 28, late start, especially for a small fighter, amateur background, or not. Aloyan has been a professional for a year, had 4 fights, won them all, good start, he didn't stop any opponent, but his debut was a 10 rounder, he has done 12 rounds once, been 10 3 times, so he has done the rounds.

Tete is only slightly older than Aloyan, and he has had 30 fights, Aloyan has had 4, Aloyan may have a great amateur career behind him, and that is good, relevant, but it doesn't compensate, and 4 fights is not many.

Aloyan has beaten 2 unbeaten opponents, which is good, but one of them was a very close SD, another was an SD but he won by landslides on two cards, these were International title fights, and a Silver title fight, so Aloyan has competed at a high level for his first 4 fights.

Aloyan is good, but I think because of his possible lack of power, and his lack of experience in the pro game, lack of adaptation, I think Tete will outclass him.

I think Tete beats Aloyan 9-3/10-2

You could get good money on that.

I’ll take that!

Worst WBSS show by far.

Yep, this fight was poor, but Tabiti-Fayer was even worse. First (and hopefully last) WBSS card i regret watching.

Champion97's picture

Not an entertaining fight overall, wasn't terrible, clean work on both sides, but so much holding, you almost wanted to stop watching in those later rounds.

Aloyan boxed very well, used the ring, moved his head, threw at the right time, but experience was still a factor, and Tete, in the early rounds, with that jab, I think just picked up enough points, and although Aloyan came on stronger in tne second half, it wasn't enough, and Tete didn't let him dominate, and Tete won quite clearly I think.

Aloyan will have learned a lot from this fight, in a less competitive division, can definitely be a world champion. Tete goes to the semi-finals, I understand he's fighting the winner of Burnett vs Donaire, will be an interesting fight.

This is the best division in boxing in my opinion!

BoxNationscores12's picture

I think it was 2 fighters who in the early part, over thought their work, got into a mode a pattern, and a rhythm which is hard to break. I think Tete did enough, the knockdown sealed it, the there was probably more in it as well. 'Better to win ugly than to lose pretty', it's about getting the win. Usually technically good fighters don't both miss as many as both missed in this fight, styles makes fights, they didn't gel, you often get that with two southpaws, but I don't think stance was a factor in this fight, I just think neither were willing to take that extra risk. Sometimes you just wait for the other guy to make a mistake, Tete thought he could just win it on the jab, so he was waiting for Aloyan to make a mistake.
