Prediction.

Usyk won by a fair margin last time, he'd been less active than Joshua, and it was only his third fight at heavyweight, this time Usyk is more experienced at heavyweight, and it's an immediate rematch, so activity is more or less neutral. On the other hand, Joshua had his second professional fight against a southpaw last time, which was definitely a factor, and this time, he's properly prepared to fight a southpaw, and while Usyk likely didn't put a foot wrong, Joshua seemed to get the tactics very wrong, he had the wrong game plan against Usyk, this time he has arguably the best trainer in the world, it takes time to build a trainer/fighter relationship, there's only so much any trainer can add to a fighter in 1 camp, but just getting Joshua to be more active and aggressive should be very important. Usyk hurt Joshua at least twice last time, he has Joshua's respect, but with his lack of power, he couldn't follow it up like Klitschko or Ruiz, and I think Joshua will be confident in the pocket. It will be interesting to see how Usyk deals with Joshua's pressure if he forces the tempo that Chisora and Briedis did, Joshua likely isn't stronger than Chisora, and it isn't his natural style, but he hits harder, and has better stamina. It will be interesting to see how Joshua holds up this time if he takes more risks and is open to taking more shots. Whether Joshua can keep Usyk under pressure, could be very important, Usyk has had little to no problems past 4 rounds in any fight, he's near unbeatable once he's found his rhythm, the mid rounds could be cruicial.

I think this will be a very different fight to last time, I think Joshua will be aggressive, his power shots will come off his jab, but he will be varied and have a high output, Usyk will be on the defensive, but will hold up mentally, and will hurt Joshua with a counter. I think Joshua will keep forcing the tempo even after Usyk had hurt him, will recover well, and Usyk won't be able to box comfortably. I think Usyk will punch off the ropes and punch with Joshua more often as the rounds go on, and will be far more accurate. I think Joshua will hold up well mentally in the late rounds, will keep trying to force the tempo, but his fatuige will allow Usyk to let his hands go more often, Usyk will do all the damage, will push Joshua back more easily as the late rounds go on, Usyk will make Joshua miss in the pocket, and Joshua will take punishment.

I think Usyk will win by UD again, I don't think it will be much closer or wider than last time, but both fighters will land a lot more shots. I think Joshua had the potential to beat Uysk the first time, the stance and tactics aspects favour him, but I think last time was Joshua's best chance, and the weight, activity aspects will be important, and Usyk is the more intelligent fighter, will make the better adjustments from the first fight, will be step ahead of Joshua for most of the fight.

MZam04's picture

Personally, I think Usyk will stop AJ around Round 8 ish. I think AJ will try to be aggressive and KO Usyk in the early rounds, but we've seen in the Gassiev and first AJ fight that Usyk can recover well from big shots. I reckon AJ might have some success early (might be able to drop Usyk if he lands an absolute hammer) but I think Usyk will be able to survive. Joshua has had a big stamina issue in a lot of his fights and I think it will haunt him again in this one. After round 5 ish I think he will slow down massively and that's when Usyk will start to flurry him. AJ will try to hold on but by round 8 I reckon he'll be finished and will be TKO'd due to exhaustion. Basically, I think this fight will be similar to Bellew's fight against Usyk albeit I think Joshua will have more success than Bellew. I could maybe see Joshua getting an early KO if he goes for broke but considering how good Usyk's chin seems to be I think that's unlikely. I do want AJ to win as AJ VS Fury would be a huge fight but I feel bad rooting against Usyk considering everything he's done for his country and he just seems like a really cool guy.

Aj is a clown

charliemason's picture

Fantastic prediction mate, spot on.

charliemason's picture

I think AJ will start aggressively, without much success apart from couple good shots. Then towards middle rounds when Usyk finds his rhythm, he will tire AJ out, winning the vital mid rounds, then counter AJ badly as the rounds progress ending in a KO victory for Usyk.

Less than 24 hours to go lads! I had a dream the other day AJ won by 2nd Round KO.

A few days ago, I dreamt that Usyk dropped Joshua in round 1 with a left hook to the body and Joshua didn't beat the count lol

MZam04's picture

If either of us are right then we're prophets

Jarod Killian's picture

And I had a dream I was your bookie lol

Not a surprising outburst post-fight from Joshua in spite of Sky saying it was. He's always been that sort of person, it was Hearn who kept him on a leash for most of his career, telling him how to conduct himself in front of the media. Pretty poor from Joshua to steal Usyk's moment away from him.

MZam04's picture

I haven't seen the Fight cause I'm poor but apparently the 115-113 scorecard was bs. Either way congrats to usyk I'm sure he's done his country proud. Listen I like aj but that outburst was so out of order. Like I saw a video on twitter and I was thinking 'what a bellend'

Anthony Joshua is a gruesome bastard and a complete piece of shit. At this point, the word crybaby ought to be synonymous with Anthony Joshua cause he has to be the biggest crybaby I've ever seen and a solid pile of shit. I hope the biggest stinking Waste Management Disposal truck was waiting for him at the back of King Abdullah Sports City's ready to drive him to the nearest dumpster where he belongs. Anyways, hopefully the sport of boxing can move on without ever seeing this big hunking wuss and shit excuse for a human being again. Congrats to Usyk for winning this solid and making his countrymen proud!

Agreed, the only possible excuse he can have is that he was still concussed, because I have no idea what the hell he was thinking with that outburst. I don’t even know what he was trying to say. Very strange man, Joshua is.

The thing that pisses me off the most is that Feldman will walk away with no consequences. How do you give AJ the last round…say you wanna be the biggest AJ rider ever and give him every round that was within a 5 punch difference, best you could get 7-5.

TheUndefeated's picture

Glen Feldman also scored Pacquiao vs Thurman for THURMAN. Oddly, he fares much better than other judges on the whole.

I think both fighters improved from the first fight, Joshua did a better job of using his strength, and did a lot more damage than in the first fight, but he took a lot more damage himself. Joshua threw the jab to the head and body in the early rounds, was more active than in the first fight, but because he didn't try to swarm Usyk, it was still tentative, Usyk found more gaps, and as the rounds went on, Usyk was a step ahead more often, his feet and positioning were ahead of Joshua's, and Joshua knew he'd miss if he threw. Joshua did great work to the body, he set up head shots with body shots, I was surprised he was able to land the right to the head when he had success, Usyk was hurt bad, and Joshua had the right response. I think Garcia did a great job with Joshua, helped him do a much better job of pressuring Usyk, and built the left hook to the body into his arsenal, but I don't think he'd had enough time with him to know the best way to communicate with him in the corner, and because he's inexperienced with heavyweights, Joshua's pacing wasn't balanced, he didn't know how conservative to be on account of his size. The finish was phenomenal from Usyk, his recovery was great, he stayed in the pocket, had a balanced mentality, and kept using his feet and working in high volume, even when the much bigger puncher was unloading. I don't see how this was a split decision, I didn't think it was closer than the first fight with how much better Usyk did than the first time, I think there is a difference in level, part of it is Usyk's intelligence, and part of it goes back to his extensive amateur background, but he beat Joshua twice, and I think beat him well.

I haven't actually seen the Fight, but I'm hearing ajs Corner said he won every round after round 3 or 4. I think that might ve lead to aj being a lot calmer thinking he already had a lot of rounds in the bag when in reality he needed to be aggressive. If his corner really said that I feel they sort of let him down a bit. That could've also played a part in the post fight meltdown

I haven't seen the fight either but Joshua had changed people in his corner after the first fight for that very reason, they lead him to believe he was leading on points so the loss was, according to very late post fight interview, a surprise to him.

If the new people in his corner did the same it is understandable that he was once again surprised to lose after being told the opposite. But that is no excuse for being disrepectful (he threw belts out of the ring). The best solution would have been to do his max in the ring no matter what the supposed score is, because now it is the second time he finished the fight trying to manage a supposed advantage and not fighting to his max, which should be the core of a boxing match.

The only comment I have on Joshua's post fight interview is how well Usyk handled it.

Yeah im not defending what he did. He definitely took away from what should've been usyks moments. I'm just saying a potential reason on why it might ve happened

Can someone explain the rationale for scoring round 5 to Joshua? I noticed this is a contested round among the fan scores and I can't really see why. I watched it several times, with no English commentary to influence my perception of the action, and I can't fathom why this is a divided round. Usyk landed the cleaner shots, the more effective shots; he jolted Joshua with a jab/hook similar to the Klitschko-Povetkin knockdown, worked the body, and generally outworked him. I can see rounds 1 and 3 going to Joshua even though I thought Usyk won those rounds, as well as round 6 which I scored even but round 5 was one of Usyk's most comfortable rounds IMO.

I'm gonna watch the Fight again tonight and rescore it. But I remember round 5 being a close one but tbf when I watched it the first time I had commentary on and was getting distracted so maybe that was troubling me. I feel the same way you do about round 5 for round 6. I see a lot of people split on who won but I thought it was a convincing usyk win.

I've watched the fight again and yeah, round 5 really wasn't close. I didn't realise how big of a difference is made when you turn the sound off

Rewatching this for the first time since watching it live on the night (and the first time not being intoxicated), Usyk was a LOT more vulnerable than I remembered. Joshua had constant success to the body, and there's no way that this version of Usyk would beat Tyson Fury. Fury would not simply stand in front of Usyk allowing Usyk to get shots off without either stepping out of danger or tying Usyk up. There were times that Usyk seemed stunned or even hurt by some of Joshua's shots: I wonder how well he would have stood up to them if it were Fury or Joyce landing those punches. Joyce is a fantastic pressure fighter and cuts off the ring far better than Joshua. Usyk would beat Joyce to the punch with his superior hand speed, but I'm not sure how well he would take Joyce's relentless thudding pressure for 12 (or less) rounds. I'm not even totally sure that Usyk would beat Wilder either.

Usyk is an ATG cruiserweight, and did very well to beat Joshua twice, but he's past his prime and absolutely there for the taking. One of Fury, Wilder or Joyce will take his zero, I'm certain about that. I'm just not sure which one it will be.
