R1- Brion is able to bulldoze Louis into the ropes right away, landing several left hooks to the body. However, once the bout gets to the center ring, Louis convincingly outjabs Brion from the outside and does the better body work between the two in the pocket.

R2- Despite showing solid head movement throughout, Louis does too, as he walks Brion down, peppering his face with the jab and occasionally snapping his head back with right hands. A mouse develops under the right eye of Brion, according to commentary. Good round for Louis.

R3- Brion is able to drive Louis back early, landing a succession of uppercuts to the body before ruining his own momentum with an accidental low blow. Both fighters land a series of left hooks on the other late, but Brion’s advantage in speed at this time allows him to land more. Definitely a solid round for the Argentine.

R4- The jab of Louis is a great weapon in this round, as it lands at a very impressive rate. Not only is it scoring him points, it is proving to be a good defensive asset, as it prevents Brion’s left hook and ruins his attempts at pressuring.

R5- Louis continues to walk Brion down and tag him constantly with the jab. While Brion scores with potshots of his own at times, Louis is countering him well and parrying a greater portion of his offense overall.

R6- The commentator is remarking how bloody the face of Brion is, but the black and white footage makes it hard to tell. Louis continues to pile points with the jab and dictate in the pocket with body work.

R7- Brion puts together a pretty good attack to the body early, but then takes a solid amount of uppercuts when pushing Louis back. A right to the solar plexus hurts Brion, but Louis does not follow up properly.

R8- When Brion pushes Louis back, he is not following up and is easily getting outworked. Louis is still throwing and landing considerably more, but he does appear to be tiring.

R9- Now Brion is doing what he should have been when guiding Loius to the ropes, which is keep his head low and throw punches in bunches. Brion is landing uppercuts to the body and sometimes coming back to land them to the head as well as left hooks.

R10- This already entertaining encounter closes with its best round yet. While Louis appeared to be tiring, he steps on the gas and brings it to Brion. Brion is finally getting under the jab and right of Louis, and does so at one point in order to come back with a flashy four-punch combination to the head. Louis does not go anywhere, and later lands a more effective four-punch combination on Brion, buzzing him a bit. Despite having the more crucial moment, he came on too late and was thoroughly outpunched in this round. Regardless, Joe Louis wins a clear unanimous decision in a very underrated bout. This certainly is not one of Louis’ vintage performances or highlight wins, but it is definitely a great scrap to watch, and a strong display of his jab.
