R1- Castaño is trying to get inside through use of a lead right hook of all things to limited success. Lara is able to strafe with him several straight left hands, mostly to the body from the outside, and to the head when Castaño tries to get in. When Castaño tries to put combinations together, Lara either effectively blocks, clinches, or turns Castaño. Lara closes out with a solid flurry.

R2- As Castaño continues to try and wing in shots from the outside, Lara starts to keep him at the end of his jab. Castaño then keeps himself out of the way of the jab altogether, but Lara still gets in several 1-2’s through the guard late, apropos to exchanging with Castaño before the bell.

R3-With Lara keeping his guard tight, Castaño is getting below it often with hooks and uppercuts to the body. The short overhand right is repeatedly landing over the glove of Lara, as Castaño begins to cut the ring off.

R4- Lara continues to paw, feint, and find openings for the left, all while looking uncomfortable in response to Castaño’s pressure. Castaño is able to close the gap and dig to the body as he pleases. One right to the solar plexus seems to sap the air from Lara momentarily.

R5- The left hand and right hook of Lara are easily landing through and around the guard of Castaño. When Castaño lets off a combination, Lara uses some smooth upper body movement to evade and deflect Castaño’s offense. The jabs and feints are setting up lead lefts for Lara too, and he is scoting repeatedly with the left uppercut to the body. Good round for the former world champion.

R6- Castaño is doing most of his work to the body, which is the only area Lara is not defending. Lara blocks a flurry and taunts Castaño right after, only to take a few left hooks after. Even though Lara got in some lefts and uppercuts, he was effectively outpaced and outworked in the round since he seemingly sat back and let Castaño work too much.

R7- Castaño becomes an ineffective plodder, as Lara keeps him walking into left hands over and over again. Even when feinting, moving his head or guarding is Castaño able to protect himself or get an offense going. Castaño finds some openings when it is far too late, and is hit by a cheap shot after the bell.

R8- When Castaño traps Lara against the ropes, Lara keeps his gloves high and turns his body just right to block most of the shots precisely. With his target coming to him nonstop, Lara is content to plant and dig to the body, but he does buzz Castaño with a straight left late. Castaño tries to get revenge, but lands nothing as a result.

R9- A mouse is visible under Lara’s right eye. Castaño is really sitting down on his hooks to the body, but still throwing them in solid volume. He is also refusing to let Lara clinch or fall for his traps, and he bullies him along the ropes as he pleases. The high guard of Castaño is catching a lot of Lara’s lefts, in what was a good comeback round for the beltholder.

R10- Some inside fighting occurs, and Lara actually gets the better of most of it with his body punching and swift movement. Upon developing hooks and uppercuts to Castaño’s midsection, he is swaying out of range of Castaño’s offense. Though Castaño is getting in uppecuts and hooks of his own, Lara is beating him to the punch and still landing lefts from the outside to add on to his inside work.

R11- After taking a left and an uppercut, Castaño gets in Lara’s chest and attacks his body with combinations. The guard of Lara is preventing a number of Castaño’s uppercuts from getting through, but he is still getting some in regardless. The body work has clearly done its toll to some degree, as Castaño is the fresher of the two this late in the fight. Lara did get in some clean lefts of course, but was outgunned and outpaced here.

R12- Lots of give and take action breaks out once Lara opens the round with a 1-2 to Castaño’s face. Castaño is cutting him off and letting shots rip to the body, not giving Lara any space at all. Lara is still getting in a lot of lefts, but Castaño does not let any of them go unanswered until the final bell. The right of Castaño is landing a lot, and he even starts to double and triple on it. There’s no power when he does this, but it still lands. I feel the judges got the correct decision for this one, and that every round was pretty easy to score. I also do wish there was a rematch, as this was such an entertaining, high-level bout. The stock of each man should not have elevated nor been harmed after this, as both pitched in impressive performances against top super welterweights at the time, just not winning ones at that. The pure boxing vs the pressure and volume of Castaño meshed very well in this ebb and flow-filled battle. It was clear by this fight that Lara no longer possessed the legs he used to, and this bout would be potentially/hopefully his last shot at glory, as I see no point in him getting a title shot at middleweight.
