R1- For once, Spence is not the busier fighter, as van Heerden is busy with the jab and seemingly always moving or punching. Spence is still able to outjab him and step out of range whenever van Heerden lets his offense go. Despite the herky jerky movement and high guard of van Heerden, Spence punctures his defense numerous times with 1-2’s.

R2- It’s crazy how much people underrated the defense of Spence. Throughout the round and even when they brawl early on the inside, Spence is able to twist away from the shots, leap out of range, or catch the shots on a single glove. The jab and 1-2 are coming constantly from Spence and piling up points. We see van Heerden taunt several times, most particularly towards the end when he wiggles after absorbing a 1-1-3, but Spence does not entertain it.

R3- The mouthguard of van Heerden comes out due upon an exchange early on. With superior hand speed and angles, Spence is effortlessly beating van Heerden to the punch in the exchanges. The counter right hooks and jab-overhand left-right hook combination are prominent for Spence in the round, as he makes van Heerden hold numerous times upon feeling his power.

R4- Spence is still in control whether in the phone booth or whether on the outside. A double right hook to the body and head makes van Heerden retreat and cover up, and his mouthpiece comes out soon after from a jab. This moment causes him to lose a point on the scorecards. For the remainder, which is a considerable amount of time, Spence continues to tattoo him with 3-punch combinations.

R5- Impressively, Spence makes van Heerden miss with approximately 15 shots in a row in the opening sequence. Now Spence is leaning up against van Heerden against the ropes, snapping his head back with uppercuts through the guard multiple times and consistently attacking his body.

R6- Spence is still barely giving van Heerden any space at all, picking off combinations as he pleases. We see van Heerden taunt Spence yet again after taking a left, and now the facial swelling that’s been building up over the past few rounds is especially apparent. About anything that comes from van Heerden hits the air or Spence’s shoulders.

R7- Spence is still beating van Heerden along the ropes, rolling from side to side to tag both sides of the body. After taking a number of shots to the head and body, van Heerden doubles over before a left to the ear blindsides him and puts him down, as he takes another left to this area on the way down. On all fours with his head down, it does not seem as if he will get up, but he does. As van Heerden tries to fight it out, he ends up going down in the same fashion from a left uppercut to the gut, just beating the count at nine. Clearly cloudy in the head, van Heerden turns his back after hearing the 10-second signal, but escapes from any more real punishment. Great round for Spence.

R8- The left eye of van Heerden is now purple and shut. Despite the punishment he absorbed in the previous round, van Heerden comes out and lands a few good punches, even knocking Spence’s mouthpiece out for a turn with a right hook. Once the mouthpiece is back in tact, it seems to wake Spence up, as he immediately rushes out and lands a big left. The volume ends up overwhelming van Heerden, as he lands hooks, overhand lefts, and uppercuts at will. With van Heerden getting tee’d off on, the ref wisely stops the contest. Great, brutal performance from Spence.
