Round 1- Pacquiao is staying very active with the jab and bangs to the body of Clottey with some rapid combinations, as Clottey’s high guard defense makes it hard to land upstairs. On top of that, Clottey is hardly getting off shots, and doesn’t seem to land much but a few right hands in the final minute. This round would pretty much set the tone for the remainder of the fight.

Round 2- Pacquiao is throwing combinations upstairs and downstairs on the defensive Clottey, particularly scoring with the lead right hook to the body. He is now having an easier time penetrating Clottey’s guard. Clottey showboats after getting hit with a looping left. Clottey lands some stiff jabs in the final minute, but still isn’t doing close to enough to win the round.

Round 3- Clottey comes out and establishes more authority in this round. He is able to land some lead rights and uppercuts, but Pacquiao is scoring with the right hook to the body and left hand to the head and midsection consistently. Clottey lands a solid right hand at one point, but Pacquiao fires some combinations that trap him in the corner momentarily. Best round of the fight and Clottey’s best round, but he does not do enough to edge it.

Round 4- Pacquiao is stepping to the right side and landing body shots. Pacquiao is getting through and around the guard pretty well, and scoring more often with the uppercut than in the previous rounds. Clottey is able to block plenty of shots, especially when Pacquiao tees off against him on the ropes, but his rare offense isn’t helping him at all. The best moment of the round and the fight is when the ref warns Pacquiao for landing a two-fisted punch, despite everyone including him laughing at it.

Round 5- Now Pacquiao is using more lateral movement in this round, allowing Clottey to take the initiative. Despite coming forward, Clottey is still tenative, but still lands some shots occasionally. Still, Pacquiao is easily outworking and outscoring him with his combination-punching.

Round 6- Clottey is standing right in front of Pacquiao, but this does little more but provide himself as a tricky target. Pacquiao is able to win the round easily off of his combinations to the body. Clottey gets off some right hands and jabs, but his output still remains simply too little.

Round 7- Clottey starts off the round with a few combinations, but now he is the one unable to get to the target of Pacquiao. Pacquiao has not been landing too much despite his activity, but he’s certainly been landing enough to win these rounds. Clottey lands a decent uppercut inside, but Pacquiao comes back to trap him on the ropes with his flurries.

Round 8- Clottey gets in his most effective punch of the fig ht- a low blow. Pacquiao is not focusing on the body as much in this round, but is able to land several straight lefts and right hooks through and around the guard of Clottey en route to another one-sided round.

Round 9- Nothing seems to have changed in this round. Clottey is still staying on the defensive and punching too few in between, while Pacquiao is dominating in terms of punches landed off volume alone. Pacquiao seems to hurt Clottey with a right hook within one of his flurries, as Clottey goes and stands in front of the ropes after being hit with it.

Round 10- Pacquiao does not seem to be throwing anything hard anymore, which is smart because there is really no point. He lands enough 1-2’s and body shots to simply control the round.

Round 11- Clottey starts to come on finally, as he twice snaps back the head of Pacquiao multiple times with left uppercuts in the pocket, but Pacquiao responds each time with a volley of blows. When Pacquiao lands these flurries to the body and head, he is able to move Clottey around the ring as he pleases. While Clottey did land the best shots of the round, he took far too many to win it. Funny how the commentary entertains the idea of a Pacquiao-Mosley clash, which is an awesome bout on paper, but realistically turned out to be as or even more dull than this bout.

Round 12- Neither seems to go for it in the twelfth, with Pacquiao easily putting it in the bag by landing 2-3 to every one by Clottey. It’s a shame for the huge crowd in this fight that showed up to see a rather dull, yet occasionally interesting bout. While this wasn’t one of Pacquiao’s best performances due to it being hard to look good against Clottey, he did all that was necessary to win and pitched a shutout, handing Clottey his most lopsided loss of his career. I believe the clash of Pacquiao’s heavily offensive style and Clottey’s tenative style, mixed with Clottey being wary of Pacquiao’s power made this fight turn out the way it did. While Clottey did land some good shots throughout, he wasn’t able to be consistent enough with his offense to win a round, except maybe the third. Funny how Pacquiao in the post fight interview talked down on Mayweather’s style, as a super fight between them had failed to fall through at this time, when this would not actually help him when they did fight years later. Following this easy victory though, Pacquiao would move up a final time in his next bout.
