Gold's picture

Classic fight with very high level boxing as expected from Toney and McCallum. The fight wasn't a robbery and was hard to score, but especially early in Toney's career judges weren't very receptive to his style. I thought Toney should have won, he landed the better blows consistently across the fight. This was arguably peak Toney, both him and McCallum looked great in this fight but Toney's sharp power counters and physicality kept McCallum from being able to do his best work to the body. With those advantages, Toney was able to wear McCallum down and finish the fight much stronger. It's interesting the fight was billed as who will be the next great middleweight after Hagler and I recall they discussed how they looked like "true middleweights". Neither of them fought much longer at Middleweight or unified titles, but both of them went on to win titles at higher weights.
