R1- The two are feeling eachother out at a close, calm pace. While Campbell gets in a number of straight lefts to the body, Linares is typically beating him to the punch and dictating the pace.

R2- The glove and shoulder control is favoring Campbell, as Linares is only able to graze him with his left hooks. A bit more lead hooks to the head land for Campbell, seemingly. However, Linares is able to get in several rights through the guard, including one in an exchange that is perfectly timed. This said punch manages to draw blood from under Campbell’s right eye and put him down on the canvas. Campbell gathers himself on his knees, but ends up taking a few more rights to his cut and left hooks to his body. Campbell gets rocked by a right hand before the end. Great round for Linares and a pivotal one as well.

R3- Campbell is staying on the outside and firing straight shots, but Linares is catching them on his guard and ceases Campbell’s attack with a series of hooks to the body. Twice, Campbell is moved back by straight right hands. The defense of Linares is effective throughout, as not only is his guard proving to be tight, but he also impressively sways out of the way of a flurry from Campbell at one point.

R4- Linares is still slipping shots to the head at a good rate, but Campbell is able to have some success to the body, starting off his groove early with a three-punch combination to the body. The check hook lands with great accuracy for Campbell, who is also countering to the body when Linares lunges forward.

R5- A left and a chopping right hook land for Campbell, but Linares comes back to land a right to the head. Linares is getting off first, finding some success with his lead right hand, but moreso within his body work. Campbell is potshotting with the left and having success to the body as well, but Linares seemed to be a slight step ahead here.

R6- Upon being dominated for most of the first five rounds, here is where Campbell would build a strong momentum. The right hook and straight left of Campbell are landing from the getgo and even setting one another up. Notably, Campbell uses a straight left to the body in order to set up a right hook to the head, rocking Linares. Linares cuts the distance with his head movement and responds with a flurry, which is mostly blocked by Campbell. The straight left starts to land with regularity for Campbell in the final minute and he notably makes Linares do a shuffle after landing this punch on two different occassions. A nice check left uppercut lands for Linares at one point and even though he got a fair anount of work done here, this definitely was a good comeback round for Campbell.

R7- A right hand lands in the opening for Linares, who takes a right hook-jab-left uppercut-right hook from Campbell in response. This instance is not the only time in the round that we see Campbell follow up his right hook with a jab, as both punches prove to be effective counters for him at times. The right hook is landing accurately for Campbell, causing Linares to nod in approval at one of them. The highlight of the round is when Campbell ducks a right hand from Linares, making him stumble forward, just to shrug at him after, hilariously. Another good round for Campbell.

R8- Whether he is flicking or snapping with it, Campbell is able to keep Linares off with the jab at times. The counter left is making Linares hesitate upon walking into them as well. One moment occurs where Linares misses a right, just to take a right hook in return, but not without managing to land a clean right hand after. In the final thirty seconds, Campbell digs in some thudding hooks to the body.

R9- Swelling is now appearing under the left eye of Linares, who comes out motivated. A 2-2-3 lands early for Linares, who does a nice side step to land a left uppercut after. From there, it becomes a war of Linares’ body work versus Campbell’s jab and counter right hook. In the final minute, Campbell steps on the gas, landing right hooks to the head behind his straight left to the body. A left hook-right hook-left hook to the body lands for Campbell before he punctuates with a right hook up top. Definitely a better round for Linares, but still a Campbell-round.

R10- Linares has mild success to the body early on, just for Campbell to respond with two harder body shots. The jab is still working for Campbell, whether he lands with it or not. What Campbell is more effective and accurate with is the counter left hand, causing a moment where Linares smiles after walking into a pair of left hands. A right hand lands for Linares after this sequence, causing the gash under Campbell’s eye to worsen. Campbell closes out the round with more solid body work.

R11- A sweeping right hook opens up the round for Campbell. However, Linares comes back to land with his own lead hook and a quick flurry to the body. Linares spends a lot of the round keeping Campbell’s lead hand busy in order to distract him long enough to do clean work downstairs. The head movement enhances in the final minute for Linares, who is the aggressor throughout.

R12- A barrage of right hooks and left hands, all to the body land for Campbell early. Campbell attempts this same outburst, just to run into a counter right hand that wobbles him. Outside of this punch, Linares is doing his best work to the body too, whether it’s with the jab or with his combinations. The jab to the body is setting up left hooks upstairs for Linares. The two get into a showboat fest before the bell. Super close fight, with both having great moments throughout. The power and skills of both men were certainly on display this night. While I can understand one scoring the fight gor Campbell, especially given that Linares won the only two swing rounds of the bout (one and five), I do think that the knockdown proved to be the determining factor. One has to credit Campbell for coming back from an early knockdown, cut, and big disadvantage on the scorecards to outclass an elite world champion gor as long as he did, showing efficient timing, power, and distance control during. While the knockdown was the ultimate determining factor, it is very clear that the championship rounds belonged to Linares due to his body attack and enhanced timing on shots.
