Round 1- Both are working off the jab and 1-2 early, with Pacquiao landing the cleaner shots between the two and establishing himself as the ring general, moving Matthyse around as he pleases.

Round 2- Pacquiao is still outjabbing Matthyse, and is counter Matthyse’s jab with chopping right hooks. Matthyse clearly is showing respect for the power of Pacquiao, as he is being tenative and not committing much do anything, which is unusual for him. When he does throw, Pacquiao is able to deflect a majority of his blows with his gloves.

Round 3- Matthyse comes out and tries a combination, but is still unable to find Pacquiao, who swiftly puts him on his back with a left uppercut right after. Pacquiao fires some 1-2’s at a back pedaling Matthyse. Late in the round, Pacquiao starts to land some right hooks and left uppercuts, clearly bothering Matthyse, who looks even more hesitant to commit to anything now. Great round for Pacquiao.

Round 4- The lead left from Pacquiao is landing with good accuracy. Matthyse lands flush with his best right hand of the fight, but it does nothing to Pacquiao. Pacquiao is also countering with the right hook and left uppercut, as both punches found him success in the previous round.

Round 5- A left hand has Matthyse hurt early, as he covers up and back pedals right after. Pacquiao keeps the jab in his face and works hooks to his body in between. Near the end, Matthyse finally starts to score with some decent punches, but Pacquiao lands a quick and seemingly glancing right hook that makes Matthyse take a knee as a delayed reaction. One has to assume that Pacquiao hit him on his eye that was injured in his fight with Postol. Another strong round for Pacquiao.

Round 6- Some good action starts out the opening seconds until Pacquiao gets a break after being hit with a low blow. Once recovered, Pacquiao responds with a couple of left uppercuts. The right hook-left uppercut combination has been a great weapon for Pacquiao throughout. He is also scoring well with the lead left hand. Pacquiao taunts Matthyse in his typical fashion after blocking a combination. The power, speed and angles of Pacquiao have prevented Matthyse from doing anything real in this fight. Entertaining round.

Round 7- A pair of 1-2’s put Matthyse on the defensive. Matthyse recovers, but Pacquiao continues to pick his shots off from there. Another right hook-left uppercut combination drops Matthyse to a knee for the third knockdown of the fight. A couple seconds into the count, Matthyse spits out his mouthpiece, promoting the referee to stop the fight. Great comeback performance for Pacquiao. While retirement seemed to be the most logical option for him after the Horn fight, Pacquiao proved he still had some left. He was just far too much for Matthyse in every department tonight, as he barely got touched and had his way every minute of the fight. Matthyse was damaged goods at this point and the smaller man, but I think Pacquiao beats the very best version of Lucas Matthyse. They would have a hell of a fight at 140, with Pacquiao also winning by stoppage at some point. After suffering his most lopsided career defeat, Matthyse would wisely retire. Pretty sad to see him go out like this. As for Pacquiao, he would go on to have a strong year in 2019.
