There is a common misconception about this fight that Toney was so obviously and hopelessly behind on the cards, so thoroughly outboxed by Nunn, that he needed to find a miraculous punch from nowhere to salvage victory from certain defeat.
Whilst it is evident that two of the scoring officials were utterly enamoured with the defending champion’s points building flurries, the reality is that Toney was laying a pretty solid foundation in the first half of the fight, learning to time Nunn’s speed and movement, before gradually turning the tide from the seventh round onwards.
The crowning moment of one of the sport’s finest practioners of the past 30 years and, almost certainly, its least appreciated.
